ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power took to the air last week for a road trip that covered Tampa Bay, then Sarasota to see Matt Krause and Bronson Arroyo at the Cincinnati Reds’ spring training headquarters….and then on to Gainesville, Florida to attend the 4th Annual University of Florida Strength Clinic. First things first, if you find yourself in Gainesville, be sure to check out Ballyhoo Grill for dinner and too relax. More importantly, start your day off right with breakfast at the 43rd Street Deli. French Toast, Sweet Potato Pancakes…. traditional eggs and sausage….. you won’t leave hungry! From there, it’s on to the clinic. Of course, it was hosted by the University of Florida’s Director of Strength & Conditioning, Mickey Marotti who joined us for an ASAP Podcast back in ’07….. and his strength staff, who found a way to keep nearly 275 coaches and fitness professionals comfortable during their two days at the clinic. There was plenty of room for all in the 25,000 square feet training complex used by the Florida Gators football squad. The facility is an amazing complex housed in the depths of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium… known as “The Swamp” to Gator fans. And ASAP plans to take you behind the scenes this fall when the defending National Champions take to the field for 2009. Take a look at our exclusive ASAP Performance Video and hear direct from Coach Marotti and get a look inside the Gator training center. Consider this video a “part One”, as we’ll have more later.
Coach Mickey Marotti shows off his 25,000 square foot weight training complex to ASAP Program Director Ted Lambrinides. Professional colleagues for over 25 years!

Today, we’ll take a look at proper techniques that should be used when performing the Barbell Squat. The coaching points will be provided by University of Florida Strength & Conditioning Coach, Mickey Marotti. The Gators, winners of national championships in both football and men’s basketball this year, have been doing a lot of things right…..including the barbell squat. Here’s the proper techniques. I’ll preface this by informing you that the first thing that they do is to use wooden sticks…like broom sticks….and they perform an overhead squat, in order to best view the ankle, knee and hip flexibility.
feet a little bit wider than shoulder-width apart
toes slightly pointed outward
When using the stick….stick straight up overhead, behind the ears…arms locked out
hold the stick with a "snatch" grip
slowly descend, with the hips going back first
try to keep the knee behind the toe
back flat
chest up
chin…up high
try to descend to where the quads are parallel to the ground
slow down!
pause at the bottom
drive up slow!
Once the athlete has shown proper form and technique in this aspect, Coach Marotti then has the athlete progress to performing front squats. He feels that this helps the "bend-ability" of the athlete. After the athlete shows progress being made on this exercise…then he will finally have the athlete perform the regular barbell squat….all using the same coaching points explained above. ASAP Athletic Strength And Power wishes to thank Coach Mickey Marotti for today’s coaching points.

ASAP Athletic Strength And Power has gone straight to the top. For this podcast we looked to the National Champions of college football, the University of Florida Gators for some of the “nuts and bolts” of program design and philosophy. The head strength and conditioning coach there is Mickey Marotti, who worked as a graduate assistant at Ohio State University in the late 80’s, on to West Virginia for a couple of years as an assistant strength coach….then on to being a head strength coach at the University of Cincinnati and later, the University of Notre Dame, before landing in Gainesville, Florida to take the same role with the Florida Gators. Coach Marotti took a time out to share some of his insights into the strength training and conditioning of football players. Mickey is also on the ASAP Athletic Strength And Power Advisory Board
Coach Marotti will be hosting his 2nd Annual Gator Strength Clinic on March 2nd, 2007. ASAP Director, Ted Lambrinides will be one of the main speakers at this clinic in Gainesville. Also, look for Kurtis Shultz, strength coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be on hand! Here’s a Gator Strength Clinic Registration Form
