  • Nick Savage….. Departs Mississippi State with HFC Dan Mullen to Florida Gators

    Nick & ted

NFL~Zebra Technologies player tracking expert Ted Lambrinides with Coach Nick Savage

Congratulations is due to our longtime ASAP coaching colleague, Nick Savage who will accompany Head Football Coach Dan Mullen to Gainesville, Florida. Coach Savage has become the new Director of Strength & Conditioning for the Florida Gators Football team. He had held the same title with the Mississippi State Bulldogs, as well as assistant stints at Bowling Green State Univ, Ohio State, and the University of Toledo and also at Mississippi State. Coach Mullen had been able to bring in some major athletes and football stars to Mississippi State and Coach Savage played a key role in developing the players into exceptionally talented performers for the Bulldogs at "Hail State". Savage's strength training knowledge was able to flourish under the tutelage of Ohio State's Mickey Marotti and Maryland's Rick Court. Now, he's in charge of getting the Gator football squad prepped to to battle in the SEC East Division, where the Georgia Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks lie in wait. And the frenzied fans at "The Swamp" would like nothing more than to revisit the kind of days experienced under Coach Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.

Be sure to follow ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power for future updates as we'll be heading down to Gainesville to check in on how Nick Savage is helping to get the Gators' bite back!

  • ASAP Podcast with Dr. Robert Burger M.D. Orthopaedic Surgeon, Beacon Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Specialtist

Burger-large-e1494622921507ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Podcasts caught up with Dr. Robert Burger a few years ago at the football symposium held at Beacon Orthopedics West in Cincinnati. In this podcast, Dr. Burger talks about his background and what led him to the foreground of orthopedic surgery, with specialty to sports medicine, in the midwest. He also speaks about the more prevalent injuries found in athletics today and the rehabilitation of those injuries.

Dr Burger was a former Notre Dame Fighting Irish football player who worked himself into the starting line-up on a team that had Joe Montana as their starting quarterback. The hard work that Burger embraced, earned him an opportunity for a National Championship with that squad! Years later, Dr. Burger's son Bobby also made the Notre Dame team, he as a tight end/fullback. Another son, Chris starred at Xavier University in Cincinnati as a Captain of the Musketeer golf team. Meanwhile, another son, Joe Burger, starred at Ohio State Football, also playing for a National Championship in 2014. Later, the 5 time OSU scholar athlete was elected Captain for the 2016 Buckeyes.

Tuesday, Dr. Burger will repair my knee! It's very reassuring having the consummate and well known Cincinnati native handling the arthroscope, especially since he's the Head Team Physician and Medical Director for Xavier University Athletics, Orthopaedic Consultant for the Cincinnati Reds, and head Orthopaedic Team Physician for the College of Mount St. Joseph athletics. Additionally, he is Head Team Physician for the Cincinnati Steam and his alma mater, LaSalle High School.

  • Cincinnati Bearcats Football & Strength Training

IMG_5358It's a new era of football for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Coach Luke Fickell and his very experienced staff are in town now and they're beginning to build the foundation that needs to be established for future prosperity. The base is often times the most difficult part of building a structure. But once it's established…. lookout! And that's where Brady Collins enters the picture. He's the guy who Coach Fickell has entrusted to lead his young Bearcats as the Director of Football Sports Performance. Here's a few game pics and Bearcats-in-training videos to show you how Coach Collins and his staff are laying down the groundwork.

  • ASAP @ INDIANA HOOSIERS at Michigan State Spartans

Michigan's State's longtime strength and conditioning coach Ken Mannie, one of the most respected in the business, had to have felt a little pride factor following the Spartans' come-from-behind victory in front of 75,000 at Spartan Stadium on October 21 versus the Indiana Hoosiers. Mannie's FOURTH QUARTER PROGRAM is installed during those early morning off-season training sessions when nobody's watching. Demanding and exhausting, the program is designed to prepare the Spartans for conditions that will test their physical and mental preparation. This year's MSU Football team is very young and inexperienced. In fact, there are only four starting senior players. Two on offense and two on defense. Given this type of situation, team strength and conditioning is even more of a concern. But, on a picture perfect day near the banks of the old Red Cedar River on the East Lansing, Michigan campus, the Michigan State Spartans defensive unit kept MSU within reach all afternoon. The Indiana Hoosiers had a very fine effort behind two of their Cincinnati, Ohio guys, young quarterback Peyton Ramsey and linebacker Tegray Scales. However, three field goals were not enough to down the Spartans on their Homecoming weekend. With the ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power GAMEDAY Feature crew on hand, Quarterback Brian Lewerke found WR Felton Davis wide open after making the right read to haul in the touchdown catch that gave the Spartans their first lead of the day. A few minutes later, MSU running back L.J.Scott took a hand-off into the end zone, basically unimpeded, for the game's final score. The Spartans had survived another 4th quarter scare, though it appears that  sixty minute battles … or even more….  might be the norm for 2017. Congratulations to Head Coach Mark Dantonio and Coach Mannie on another Michigan State victory.

And as Coach Dantonio always says    "Go Green"

  • Auburn Tigers Nutrition: Peanut Butter Protein Bars Recipe courtesy of Lauren Silvio Auburn Team Nutritionist

20170620_154102I have a new go-to post workout snack! And, I figure if it's one on the faves of the Auburn Tiger Football squad…. count me in.  During a recent meeting with Tigers' Head Strength Coach Ryan Russell, we observed an impressive strength training session followed by an intense conditioning workout in the relatively new indoor practice facility. Leave no doubt, the Auburn Tigers are looking very fit…. and very big. They have a few guys that have an NFL look! Coach Russell and his staff have been doing a great job in preparation for the upcoming 2017 season.

Having a team nutritionist centered right inside the training facility is paying dividends for Auburn. And Lauren Silvio is doing quite an impressive job.  By accident, I stumbled upon her and her staff producing a batch of Peanut Butter Protein Bars/nuggets. Anyway, the bottom line is that they happen to be a player favorite. Once I heard that, I moved along with a recipe request! Here it is:

BiProJarSetAuburn Tiger Peanut Butter Protein Bites

Add the ingredients to a bowl. Mix the batch until completely combined. Cut or roll into bite size chunks

1 Scoop of Whey Protein ( I used a packet of BiPro Chocolate Whey Protein Isolate)

2 cups of oat flour      ( You can use rolled oats cycled through a blender until it's flour-like)

1 1/2 cups of Peanut Butter

    1/4  cup of honey

    Chocolate chips to taste
