  • ASAP Podcast with Quinn Barham: Ohio State Football Assistant Dir. of Strength & Conditioning

    Columbus, Ohio

Coach Barham sharing some coaching strategies with visiting Coach Terrell Williams of Cincinnati St. Xavier

There's a countdown clock in the Ohio State Buckeyes' massive strength training complex. A constant reminder to everyone involved with this program of when the BIG game kicks off. If you're a player, it's in one's subconscious. Time is ticking away….. will you be ready? Have you applied enough effort into the workout sessions? How's your bodyweight? Is it where it needs to be? The Mettler~Toledo®  scale is right across from the countdown clock that every player steps onto for their daily weigh-in as a strength coach takes notice and records the data on a master sheet.  The scale is right between Coach Mick's office and the assistant strength coaches' office.  There's no question that it's a big deal. Mickey Marotti, the Director of Football Sports Performance for the Buckeyes knows what each player is expected to weigh. At the basic level, he and his very knowledgeable staff, are responsible for making sure the players are packing on muscle and report to fall camp at their prescribed weight. The added muscle combined with being in great football condition along with daily improvement of their speed, agility and balance is critical and paramount to superior results in the coming fall season. Superior results in this program means WINNING.
The foam rollers were out in the Buckeyes' indoor facility as the players filed in for this morning training session and grabbed one. The strength staff; Marotti, Kenny Parker, Niko Palazeti, Quinn Barham and Zach Higgins are set for the first of three groups this morning. There's no question as to the tradition here. Championship, as in National Championship, banners adorn the walls of this indoor facility. The players know the expectations here. Win. And, win championships. Yet, down on the west wall of the 130 yard facility are the words 'TOUGH LOVE'. And, after observing Marotti-led programs for over thirty years, this slogan is the epitome of the strength and conditioning program here.

The tough love is doled out mostly by the strength and conditioning staff. They spend more hours with the squad than anyone else, including head coach Ryan Day!
So, for today's Athletic Strength and Power Podcast, ASAP Podcaster, Ed Cicale reached out to the team's assistant director of strength and conditioning, Quinn Barham. Like the players on this football squad, he knows the expectations of being at Ohio State, as well. The banners and the expectations at Ohio State drive the competiviveness of the strength coaching staff.  Barham is beginning his seventh year as a coach for the Buckeyes and like the other members of Marotti's staff, Quinn definitely possesses all of the necessary qualifications of a head strength and conditioning coach at the NCAA Division 1 level as well as professional football, too. Though, working with the Buckeyes and his fellow coaches, Parker, Palazeti and Higgins is very rewarding as they're all highly motivated and working in a positive climate that meshes well.
The countdown clock is visible from Coach Barham's office desk as it is always decreasing the remaining time available to prepare the players. Barham knows every minute of every day counts, and there's no time to waste. He know what's expected.

Like the guy whose name is on the building, Woody Hayes, stated, "You Win with People".
The Buckeyes are in good hands!
    Today's podcast discussions points are:

    • training for speed
    • tall lean falls
    • three bucket pose
    • barbell and split squats
    • hip mobility
    • improving team speed
    • leadership and competitiveness

  • ASAP PAC-12 Feature: Arizona State Football Strength Coach Joe Connolly Podcast & Pics

    IMG_5280
    Tempe, Arizona

I had to go all the way out to the desert to track down Coach Joe Connolly, Arizona State's Director of Sports Performance. I'd last seen Joe at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan when the Michigan State Spartans hosted the ASU Sun Devils. In the end, MSU couldn't find a way to catch the shifty Sun Devil freshman QB Jayden Daniels as the capacity crowd of over 77,000, mostly in green & white, and their Sparty mascot left the stadium in shock with an upset loss. Head Coach Herm Edwards, Joe Connolly and the Sun Devil mascot, Sparky boarded their motor coaches and headed to the airport, off to PHX with the W.
Coach Connolly, a Massachusetts dude, now in his fourth year in Tempe, has settled in to Arizona living, abundant cacti, and his PAC-12 team. We'd first met back in 2008 at the University of Louisville, where Joe was an assistant with then UL Cardinals' Head Strength Coach Joe Kenn.
Joe also spent some great years at the University of South Carolina as head strength coach for the Gamecocks and their legendary Hall of Fame Head Football Coach Steve Spurrier. In fact, they ran off three straight seasons of 11 win teams! Following that, he spent a few very enjoyable years with UMass Football. But now, he's preparing the Arizona State Sun Devils for the week to week challenges of a competitive PAC-12 Conference. Things can be really good out west when you've had some nice season victories versus UCLA, USC and Washington.
Connolly is working in tandem with Coach Edwards, where they have assembled an improving squad built with a punishing, powerful running back in Rachaad White, the evasive QB Jayden Daniels and a very impactful Defense that seems to get stronger toward the end of games. Coach Connolly also has a dedicated staff to help ensure that the player development program works to maximum efficiency. Sun Devil Football Assistant Sports Performance Directors Clayton Kirven and Colbert Calhoun, as well as Graduate Assistant Weston Gadient are making certain that Sun Devils definitely have a bright future.
Arizona State will face the Wisconsin Badgers in the Las Vegas Bowl at Allegiant Stadium on Dec. 30.

  • ASAP Podcast with Beacon Orthopedics Surgeon & Shoulder Specialist Robert Rolf M.D.

Download (2)Robert Rolf M.D. is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and a graduate of La Salle High School. He attended the University of Notre Dame where he received a BS in Chemical Engineering. This served as the foundation for furthering his studies into medicine and eventually, a specialty in the shoulder following his advanced research conducted at The Boston Shoulder Institute at Harvard under the guidance and fellowships with world reknowned shoulder surgeons. Nowadays, Dr.Rolf is the Co-Director of the Beacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine sports medicine fellowship program. He's also a guest for our ASAP Podcast on the shoulder joint and rotator cuff.

The shoulder joint is definitely one of the more intricate joints of the human body. It's an amazing structure, to say the least. And, it's capable of some extraordinary athletic performance.  USA gymnast, Simone Biles is not going to have extreme success performing a Yurchenko double pike without a the shoulder joint working to perfection. Quarterback Aaron Rogers would not be able to launch a football 70 yards with pinpoint accuracy with a seriously injured shoulder.  Dr. Rolf, a distinctly skilled surgeon was able to share some of his time and expertise with ASAP~Athletic Stength And Power Podcasts in a discussion about the shoulder, and more specifically the rotator cuff, while making the intricasies of a very complicated joint quite easy to understand.

    What is the rotator cuff?
The rotator cuff is a term used for a complicated area of the shoulder joint, comprised of tendons and relatively small musculature. The rotator cuff allows us to extend our arms up over our heads, rotate our shoulders, and throw a ball or object.
The main muscles that make up the rotator cuff are:

    • the Supraspinatus
    • the Infraspinatus
    • the Teres Major
    • the Subscapularis

Other important muscles in this region that need to be considered are the latissimus dorsi, the deltoids, the pectoralis muscles and the biceps and triceps. All of the aforementioned muscles play a key role in the function of the shoulder.

The shoulder, the rotator cuff and the muscles of the back are all interrelated with the large shoulder bone blades, or scapula, as well as the clavicle, humerus and acromion process.  Interestingly, as Dr. Rolf discusses in our ASAP Podcast, there are seventeen muscles that attach to the scapula. Seventeen muscles! In addition, he explained that those smallish rotator cuff muscles are "two to four pound muscles", meaning that two to four pound dumbells along with the exercise bands at The Bill Jacobs Power Company, are all that's required to stimulate growth or repair to the area. The heavier weights used in bench pressing, vertical presses, cleans and rows are not effective in targeting the rotator cuff.

Athletes, especially those who are required to do a lot of throwing need to pay special attention to this area of the body. Career ending injuries or painful, nagging type injuries have been the demise of many athletes…both professional and amateur. Things can go wrong in this area….including, the aging process- where the shoulder slowly degrades over time, overuse injuries that lead to tendonitis, tears, impingement and sprains. Other injuries are due to muscle imbalances and also hard or heavy impact to the region.

A specialized program needs to be used to prevent injuries to the rotator cuff. This includes proper strengthening exercise and a regular flexibility program.

STRENGTH TRAINING for the Rotator Cuff
The following exercises should be included in a comprehensive program for the rotator cuff.

    • Side lateral raises
    • Side deltoid flys with a cable machine
    • Front Deltoid Raises with a dumbell
    • Rear deltoid flys (machine or dumbells)
    • Dumbell Shoulder press on a inclined bench
    • Lying "L" Flys
    • Standing "L" Flys
    • Lying Flys (arms straight out)
    • Normal Grip Bench Press (avoid the wide grip technique!)

    FLEXIBILITY PROGRAM

    • Straight Armed Pectoralis Stretch
    • Overhead Pole Stretch
    • External Rotation Stretch
    • Partner Deltoid Stretch
