  • The Steel Tip Collection: Newsletters for Strength and Fitness

Steeltip_collection3 Dr. Ken Leistner, with the assistance of his lovely wife, Kathy, decided to publish a newsletter in 1985 called “The Steel Tip.” The newsletter focused on information pertinent to strength and fitness enthusiasts. Dr. Ken published the newsletter for three years.
It was a newsletter that the readers looked forward to each month. The articles were informational and practical.

It is hard to believe that about a quarter of a century has past since the newsletter was published. In talking to some of the new generation of strength trainers/coaches who have recently started reading The Steel Tip Collection, they are amazed with the quality, clarity, and practicality of the information. It is as if they have stumbled upon a treasure. It is!

Finding ACCURATE, SAFE, EFFECTIVE, and PRACTICAL strength training information is not always easy. The Steel Tip Collection is NECESSARY READING for all individuals who are in the position of organizing and implementing strength training programs for others. Many of the topics in The Steel Tip Collection touch upon problems or issues that a strength coach will deal with on a daily basis. Dr. Ken approaches issues from not only a strength training perspective but from a sports medicine perspective. The common sense approach to training embedded in exercise science principles was what the The Steel Tip Collection was about. As Sam Walton once said, “the only problem with common sense is that it is not common.” ASAP whole-heartedly endorses this book as a true gem and recommends that you contact www.functionalhandstrength.com to order the book…DON’T WAIT!

  • The Jim Flanagan Podcasts Part One & Two

Flanagan If you're into strength training and you find yourself in Orlando, Florida…. you have to get in contact with Big Jim Flanagan. Jim's been in the fitness and strength business for over 40 years! Basically, he's seen it all. All of the trends….changes, for good or bad. Yet throughout all of the years, Flanagan has stuck by his guns and hasn't veered off course for the latest "workout of the month". Jim knows the principles of exercise physiology and put the information to work with people like Arthur Jones, the creator of the Nautilus machines and Dr. El Darden, an exercise physiologist, body builder, and author of a multitude of books and manuals on strength training.
Del frisco's Today, he's the director of operations for one of Orlando's favorite restaurants and top steakhouse… Del Frisco's Prime Steak & Lobster. How popular? Let's just say that the restaurant had one thousand reservations for New Year's Eve!!!!!
If that's not enough, he's also a distributor of Med-X Strength Training Equipment. And, as for working out, he owns one of the finest home gyms known to mankind. The gym has modern, state-of-the-art equipment and some refurbished original Nautilus machines. But, what really sets the home gym apart from others is the hundreds of photographs and posters…most autographed (with a personal note to Jim) by an incredible variety of famous people from all walks of life.  And each photo tells its own story… as told by Jim Flanagan.
Before Jim and I sat down for the recording session of today's ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Podcast, we stopped to eat at one of Jim's favorite diners: Shannon's Diner. The Soup of the day for that particular Friday was "Black-Eyed Pea/ Vegetable" which I had a large bowl full with a hamburger. A special recipe hamburger and the meat is ground fresh in the kitchen by the chef. I've got to tell you…. this is probably the best hamburger that I've had in the last twenty-five years. Therefore, Shannon's Diner gets ASAP Approval!  In fact, I'm planning another trip to Orlando just to go back!  Shane Also, I need to get back there so I can train with Jim Flanagan at his home training center and watch a good western movie while recovering! (Jim's an avid western movie buff).Enjoy today's podcast.

  • February 11th and 12th 2011: Big Ten Champs Michigan State Strength Clinic

DSC_0873 Before long, the bowl games will be over and the off-season will commence. So, now's the time to start the serious planning stages of how you'll build a championship program….like for example, the Michigan State Spartans! Ken Mannie and Mike Vorkapich have designed a clinic that will serve to motivate and educate all sports coaches and personal trainers and anyone else who trains and conditions athletes.
I always look forward to learning from master strength and conditioning coaches. In fact, twenty three years ago, while I was training championship high school athletes in Cincinnati, Ohio, I sought to bring in the best coaches around to help me ignite my program. Coaches like Kim Wood, Ted Lambrinides, Rock Oliver, Chip Morton, Mark Asanovich, Shaun Brown, Ken Mannie, Mickey Marotti, and Brad Bates…to name a few… all left a great influence on my program. Years later, these guys are still at it… and sharing their knowledge with those willing to learn!
Ed Cicale~ASAP Athletic Strength And Power

Anyway, you can catch a lot of those aforementioned influences… plus a few more… in East Lansing, Michigan in February:Click on the ASAP Stadium Logo for the Clinic Brochure Even smaller

Presently, a strength coach at the University of Kentucky. Founder of the internationally recognized ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power training program. Well known NFL Combine prep coach. Was on the Ohio State Buckeye Strength Staff * Speed & Exercise Physiology consultant for many NFL and NCAA programs * NCAA Speaker Bureau.

Hired by the legendary Michigan Football Coach Glenn "Bo" Schembechler. Gittleson is now working for a strength training manufacturing company and is a sought out speaker! Truly a coach to learn from. Polished speaker.

Ray "Rock" Oliver… collegiate football player and coach. Strength coach who motivates with a unique style that has led teams to National Championships! Now back at the University of Kentucky as the Head Strength Coach.

Bob Rogucki… longtime strength coach in the National Football League. Once directed the strength program for the Arizona Cardinals and is presently the Head Strength Coach with the Baltimore Ravens NFL. Always helpful and informative.
