If you're into strength training and you find yourself in Orlando, Florida…. you have to get in contact with Big Jim Flanagan. Jim's been in the fitness and strength business for over 40 years! Basically, he's seen it all. All of the trends….changes, for good or bad. Yet throughout all of the years, Flanagan has stuck by his guns and hasn't veered off course for the latest "workout of the month". Jim knows the principles of exercise physiology and put the information to work with people like Arthur Jones, the creator of the Nautilus machines and Dr. El Darden, an exercise physiologist, body builder, and author of a multitude of books and manuals on strength training.
Today, he's the director of operations for one of Orlando's favorite restaurants and top steakhouse… Del Frisco's Prime Steak & Lobster. How popular? Let's just say that the restaurant had one thousand reservations for New Year's Eve!!!!!
If that's not enough, he's also a distributor of Med-X Strength Training Equipment. And, as for working out, he owns one of the finest home gyms known to mankind. The gym has modern, state-of-the-art equipment and some refurbished original Nautilus machines. But, what really sets the home gym apart from others is the hundreds of photographs and posters…most autographed (with a personal note to Jim) by an incredible variety of famous people from all walks of life. And each photo tells its own story… as told by Jim Flanagan.
Before Jim and I sat down for the recording session of today's ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Podcast, we stopped to eat at one of Jim's favorite diners: Shannon's Diner. The Soup of the day for that particular Friday was "Black-Eyed Pea/ Vegetable" which I had a large bowl full with a hamburger. A special recipe hamburger and the meat is ground fresh in the kitchen by the chef. I've got to tell you…. this is probably the best hamburger that I've had in the last twenty-five years. Therefore, Shannon's Diner gets ASAP Approval! In fact, I'm planning another trip to Orlando just to go back! Also, I need to get back there so I can train with Jim Flanagan at his home training center and watch a good western movie while recovering! (Jim's an avid western movie buff).Enjoy today's podcast.

It was hot. It was humid. A typical mid summer afternoon in Lexington, Kentucky. Steamy. (ASAP's #1 Canon High Def video camera shut down after being in air conditioning all morning) The Wildcat football squad had just finished up a weight training session. Then, in comes the youthful basketball team. Don't forget, the Kentucky Wildcats just sent an unprecedented five first round picks to the National Basketball Association's (NBA) First Round. So, this is a young team that Coach Calipari will send out to the hardwood this year. But these young guys work hard! No question. And, they have skills!
This workout may have sent the average guy to the UK Med Center. Yet, Head Trainer Chris Simmons never waivered. He knew this bunch of guys could handle the adverse conditions, while at the same time, the players would acclimate to the training. There was plenty of ice cold Gatorade on hand and the strength staff monitored the players' heart rates with the Polar heart rate monitors…. exercise physiology at its finest here in Lexington.
Meanwhile, strength coach Mike Malone took the helm…literally, as he rode the Ram Sled that the players were driving from one end of the football field to the other. Isn't the Ram Sled a football thing? Not at Kentucky! As you'll see in this exclusive ASAP Video….. our 75th video.

Before long, the bowl games will be over and the off-season will commence. So, now's the time to start the serious planning stages of how you'll build a championship program….like for example, the Michigan State Spartans! Ken Mannie and Mike Vorkapich have designed a clinic that will serve to motivate and educate all sports coaches and personal trainers and anyone else who trains and conditions athletes.
I always look forward to learning from master strength and conditioning coaches. In fact, twenty three years ago, while I was training championship high school athletes in Cincinnati, Ohio, I sought to bring in the best coaches around to help me ignite my program. Coaches like Kim Wood, Ted Lambrinides, Rock Oliver, Chip Morton, Mark Asanovich, Shaun Brown, Ken Mannie, Mickey Marotti, and Brad Bates…to name a few… all left a great influence on my program. Years later, these guys are still at it… and sharing their knowledge with those willing to learn!
Ed Cicale~ASAP Athletic Strength And Power

Presently, a strength coach at the University of Kentucky. Founder of the internationally recognized ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power training program. Well known NFL Combine prep coach. Was on the Ohio State Buckeye Strength Staff * Speed & Exercise Physiology consultant for many NFL and NCAA programs * NCAA Speaker Bureau.
