  • ASAP Podcast with Illinois Head Football Coach Ron Zook

PodcastPresently, the University of Illinois Football team is ranked #16 in the country. The Fighting Illini are in first place in the Big Ten Conference LEADERS Division with a perfect 6-0 record. This week they’ll host the Ohio State Buckeyes who will try to prevent a third staight loss. Meanwhile, Coach Ron Zook is doing a fine job of teaching his 2011 team how to compete.

Ncf_i_zook_576Coach Ron Zook spent some time last spring with ASAP Podcaster Ed Cicale…. discussing a little bit about his days at Miami University (Ohio), known as the “Cradle of Coaches,” where the Redskins only lost one game in three seasons while he played defensive back there. Coach also emphasized the importance of the off-season strength training and conditioning program.

Zook coached at several other schools including the University of Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and Florida before arriving in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. He made a few stops in the NFL, too.

  • Cincinnati Bearcats Strength Training at Camp Higher Ground

DSC_0250-1 There are very few NCAA Division 1 Football programs that conduct their fall training camp off campus. Yet, the Cincinnati Bearcats do just that! They load up the Bearcat semis, vans, and busses and head thirty miles west to the rolling hills and backcountry of Indiana. Destination: Camp Higher Ground.
This camp isn’t about tying square knots, pitching a tent or roasting marshmallows. It’s strictly business out at this camp. And, the business is football…eat…lift weights….meetings…and more football. Head Football Coach Butch Jones removes his team from the distractions of campus where players, coaches and staff can really develop a tight knit, team atmosphere with a focus on Big East Football.

In this ASAP Video Exclusive, Head Strength Coach Dave Lawson and Assistant Michael Szerszen and ASAP Video Director Ed Cicale discuss the nuts and bolts of the strength training setup at Camp Higher Ground… and some of the basic training fundamentals employed by the UC Strength Staff to get the Bearcats game ready. After a victorious and impressive season opening contest, Cincinnati heads to Knoxville this week to take on the Tennessee Vols. Then, a few more non-conference games along with the rigors of the Big East schedule to follow. No doubt that all of the hard work, team building and strength training at Camp Higher Ground should pay off.

  • Kentucky Football 2011 Summer Strength & Conditioning Program

DSC_0079 When your football schedule includes the Florida Gators, the LSU Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks…. and in successive weeks, there’s no time to be wasted on kickin’ back and enjoying the summer.  Like most major college programs, Ray “Rock” Oliver and Ted Lambrinides have a countdown clock in their Kentucky Wildcat Strength Training complex at the E.J. Nutter Training Facility. But time seems to tick a little faster in this part of Lexington, where Kentucky Wildcat players and staff prepare for the rigors of another Southeastern Conference (SEC) football season.
ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power headed down I-75 South and found out what was going on in the weight room and out on the practice fields. As you’ll see in the exclusive, behind the scenes footage, there’s some serious work being done…. including a new flair this summer with the “Thursday Night Lights” conditioning program…. a definite high energy, highly charged effort of agility stations, quickness drills and Ram Sleds being pushed and pulled up and down the fields at breakneck speeds.
