Purdue Boilermaker Director of Football Strength & Conditioning Justin Lovett (left) discussing some of the elements of the Purdue weightroom design with coach Ted Lambrinides, an expert with the NFL player tracking technologies.

We headed north on I-65 out of Indianapolis. After a couple of back roads, ASAP arrived on the scene in West Lafayette and the campus of Purdue University…. well known for its engineering curricula. It's a prestigious university with stringent academic standards. It's also an original member of the Big Ten Conference (though known as the Western Conference in 1896), so they've been playing football there for a long time! Recently, the Boilermakers have had a resurgence under their head coach Jeff Brohm, who has the team's and fan's attention, especially after a seven win inaugural season and a Bowl victory over the Arizona Wildcats.
That kind of turnaround doesn't get accomplished without a serious training regimen. Enter Purdue's Director of Football Strength & Conditioning Justin Lovett. He's embraced his opportunity under Coach Brohm and has the Boilermakers going full steam ahead in their brand new football performance center.
ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power, had to check it out! The place is astounding and the training is real! I sat down in Coach Lovett's office and fired up the recorder for this ASAP Podcast (technical difficulty with the recording) and gained some insight into this up and coming Big Ten program!

  • Nick Savage….. Departs Mississippi State with HFC Dan Mullen to Florida Gators

    Nick & ted

NFL~Zebra Technologies player tracking expert Ted Lambrinides with Coach Nick Savage

Congratulations is due to our longtime ASAP coaching colleague, Nick Savage who will accompany Head Football Coach Dan Mullen to Gainesville, Florida. Coach Savage has become the new Director of Strength & Conditioning for the Florida Gators Football team. He had held the same title with the Mississippi State Bulldogs, as well as assistant stints at Bowling Green State Univ, Ohio State, and the University of Toledo and also at Mississippi State. Coach Mullen had been able to bring in some major athletes and football stars to Mississippi State and Coach Savage played a key role in developing the players into exceptionally talented performers for the Bulldogs at "Hail State". Savage's strength training knowledge was able to flourish under the tutelage of Ohio State's Mickey Marotti and Maryland's Rick Court. Now, he's in charge of getting the Gator football squad prepped to to battle in the SEC East Division, where the Georgia Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks lie in wait. And the frenzied fans at "The Swamp" would like nothing more than to revisit the kind of days experienced under Coach Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.

Be sure to follow ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power for future updates as we'll be heading down to Gainesville to check in on how Nick Savage is helping to get the Gators' bite back!

  • Cincinnati Bearcats Football & Strength Training

IMG_5358It's a new era of football for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Coach Luke Fickell and his very experienced staff are in town now and they're beginning to build the foundation that needs to be established for future prosperity. The base is often times the most difficult part of building a structure. But once it's established…. lookout! And that's where Brady Collins enters the picture. He's the guy who Coach Fickell has entrusted to lead his young Bearcats as the Director of Football Sports Performance. Here's a few game pics and Bearcats-in-training videos to show you how Coach Collins and his staff are laying down the groundwork.

  • ASAP @ INDIANA HOOSIERS at Michigan State Spartans

Michigan's State's longtime strength and conditioning coach Ken Mannie, one of the most respected in the business, had to have felt a little pride factor following the Spartans' come-from-behind victory in front of 75,000 at Spartan Stadium on October 21 versus the Indiana Hoosiers. Mannie's FOURTH QUARTER PROGRAM is installed during those early morning off-season training sessions when nobody's watching. Demanding and exhausting, the program is designed to prepare the Spartans for conditions that will test their physical and mental preparation. This year's MSU Football team is very young and inexperienced. In fact, there are only four starting senior players. Two on offense and two on defense. Given this type of situation, team strength and conditioning is even more of a concern. But, on a picture perfect day near the banks of the old Red Cedar River on the East Lansing, Michigan campus, the Michigan State Spartans defensive unit kept MSU within reach all afternoon. The Indiana Hoosiers had a very fine effort behind two of their Cincinnati, Ohio guys, young quarterback Peyton Ramsey and linebacker Tegray Scales. However, three field goals were not enough to down the Spartans on their Homecoming weekend. With the ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power GAMEDAY Feature crew on hand, Quarterback Brian Lewerke found WR Felton Davis wide open after making the right read to haul in the touchdown catch that gave the Spartans their first lead of the day. A few minutes later, MSU running back L.J.Scott took a hand-off into the end zone, basically unimpeded, for the game's final score. The Spartans had survived another 4th quarter scare, though it appears that  sixty minute battles … or even more….  might be the norm for 2017. Congratulations to Head Coach Mark Dantonio and Coach Mannie on another Michigan State victory.

And as Coach Dantonio always says    "Go Green"

  • ASAP Podcast with Maryland Terrapins’ Performance Coordinator Mason Baggett

Coach Mason Baggett: UMD Terrapins Football Performance Coordinator

Take one step into the University of Maryland's Football Strength & Conditioning facility and you'll be ready to grab a trapbar or attempt a set of logbar bench presses. Stuff can get crazy in there with the Assistant A.D. for Football Sports Performance Rick Court, who seemingly can be in multiple places at one time. His enthusiasm is infectious and the Terrapins are beginning to show evidence of over a year under Coach Court's watchful eyes. Not much gets past him and you'd best bring your "A" game or things could go south real quickly. The players are feeling the love. They're also starting to look like bigtime college football players. Coach Rick Court has orchestrated this scenario with Head Football Coach D.J. Durkin and together they have huge plans for the program at Maryland.

Of the many things that Court has under his umbrella, one big part is adding Mason Baggett as the team's Football Performance Coordinator. This move propels Maryland Football in unison with current sports science models. Bi-weekly meetings with the Sports Med Dept, the team nutritionist, academics as well as strength training operations and strength staff professional development keep Coach Baggett on the constant go. And, let's not forget his personal workout time that allows him to try to stay a step in front of the young Terrapins. As a matter of fact, myself and NFL sports science tracking data expert Ted Lambrinides, witnessed Mason perform a reverse heavy ball toss from the 10 yard line that sailed over the crossbar!

Coach Baggett and I sat down in the Maryland Football Tight-Ends room to record this ASAP Podcast during our visit to College Park last week. Also, Coach Court, Baggett, Lambrinides and myself donned construction site hard hats for an exclusive tour of the renovation progress of the venerable Cole Field House, a 200 million dollar undertaking that promises to be one of the top training facilities in the world. Stop back to our ASAP website for facility update photos.
