  • ASAP Feature Game #18 UCF at Cincinnati Bearcats

    IMG_4324

     Nippert at Night

A wild Friday night in Cincinnati last week as the #18 University of Central Florida Knights were in town. This was your basic slug fest from the opening kickoff till that final 'fourth and inches' play. The Bearcats' star running back Michael Warren II  had somehow been stopped short of the first down marker. The chain gang was summoned for a measurement and once again, the officiating crew did not indicate that Cincinnati had gained the first down needed to drain the clock's sixty-two remaining seconds. With the ball on the UCF 47 yd line, Fickell turned the game over to his offensive lineman, a well conditioned bunch that Head Strength Coach Brady Collins trained by squatting and dragging sleds all summer. An offensive line that had, earlier this season, tested itself against some of the toughest defensive lineman in the country…. Coach didn't waiver. First Down Bearcats. This would become Fickell's signature win as Cincinnati coach:

  • Ohio State Buckeyes Flex Their Muscles

    IMG_2922b

    Outnumbered at The Shoe

Ohio State flexed their muscles a bit at Ohio Stadium as they played host to the Cincinnati Bearcats. and with that, the Buckeyes' Asst AD for Football Sports Performance, Coach Mickey Marotti, definitely had to be pleased with what's been #developedhere in Columbus. Interestingly, Mickey
Marotti was Cincinnati’s strength and conditioning coach for nearly nine years, from 1990-98. and Brady Collins, Cincinnati's Director of Football Performance,  worked for Coach Mick as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach with Ohio State Football. Head Football Coach Luke Fickell served as interim Head Football Coach for the Buckeyes.
With their 42-0 win, Ohio State maintained their spot among college football's elite in the 2019 season, moving their record to 2-0. The Bearcats make their trip back to Cincinnati and prep for another in-state rival, the Miami Redhawks, a team that they've been playing since 1888…. 1888!

The Cincinnati Bearcats kicked off their 2019 football campaign with a bang as they were able to use their defensive prowess to their advantage and keep the visiting UCLA Bruins at bay. The PAC-12 team could have used some of their many storied players from the past, namely Troy Aikman, to change any result against the much more physical Bearcats, sporting their intimidating all black uniforms. Coach Luke Fickell has outdone the more celebrated UCLA coach Chip Kelly for a second straight year, first doing so at the Rose Bowl stadium last August. And this year's game had Cincinnati stealing the ball early, scoring, and never trailing as they rolled to the 24-14 victory at their packed Nippert Stadium.ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power has been eyeing this team for over two years and see it evolving into the kind if team that can cause headaches for anyone. With their type of Defense, which flies around with an attitude, and their Run-Pass-Option Offensive scheme, they can hang around with any team out there. The defense held UCLA to just 62 yards rushing and just 262 yards total for the game. The offense is steered by the perceptive Desmond Ridder a shifty 215 pound runner and thrower who reads the upfront moves of a solid group of offensive lineman. Incidentally, Ridder lost his voice sometime in the first half. (So, that wasn't him singing "Hotel California" as the teams trotted off the field.)  But, the heart and soul of the Cincinnati offense is their turbulent running back, Michael Warren II, the perfect combination of brute, angry power with the speed of a cyclone.

The Bruins won't be looking to schedule the Bearcats anytime in the near future. They caught the red eye back to L.A…… Cincinnati starts packing for a trip to Columbus for their next event vs Ohio State.

  • Michigan State Football: Getting Ready!

ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power is now into our Big Ten swing and to kick it off, we headed straight to East Lansing, Michigan where Coach Ken Mannie and his well seasoned strength staff were directing the Spartans deep into the Michigan State 4th Quarter Program. It was one of those invisible mornings where champions are built! We captured a ton of content…. but here's a sampler to keep you quelled for a bit until our main feature hits!

  • ASAP at Georgia Tech #ATL

IMG_0913Talk about a swarm of Yellow Jackets! This Georgia Tech Football squad was on the go as head strength Coach Lew Caralla certainly had things stirred up. This particular workout that sport science researcher and NFL player tracking specialist Dr. Ted Lambrinides and I witnessed consisted of some team building activities, some very well executed squat sets, some single-arm dumbbell bench presses. There was also a pretty serious bar hang competition going on.
The strength training facility is located within the football home of the Yellow Jackets, Bobby Dodd Stadium. The scoreboard flashed a message, but nobody was there to see it. However, just a short walk through the tunnel and it was a complete contrast to the action inside the weightroom. We entered the Hugh Spruill Strength Training Center at 5:44 a.m. as the strength staff made preparations for the workout. A few minutes later… the action. And here's more pics of the training!

  • ASAP at Ohio State PRO-DAY 2019

IMG_9711It was PRO-Day at Ohio State last month, an orchestrated event directed by the Ohio State AD for Football Sports Performance, Mickey Marotti  where scouts and coaches from throughout the National Football League swarm into the OSU Buckeyes' much heralded Woody Hayes Athletic Center to get an up-close and personal look at some of the NFL Draft eligible Buckeye football stars. It's not quite the stress of the NFL Combine that's conducted in Indianapolis every winter, but the players have another opportunity to display their skills, speed and strengths. However, this time, it's in the players' comfy confines right there in Columbus, Ohio and every NFL team sends representation. In many cases, it's the team's head coach who wants another look.

    "Truck" Crossing Ahead

Cincinnati Bearcat star running back Michael Warren II makes his way toward  the 'Cats bicep station. ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power made a site visit to the University of Cincinnati and it was an "upper" day at the Bearcats strength training complex which sits near the lower levels of the Fifth Third Arena, a sparkling and freshly renovated big time basketball arena.  Just like our last visit, the Bearcats have an aggressive demeanor during their training sessions. There's no time for shenanigans as Coach Brady Collins' rugged and juiced style keeps things goal oriented. This group of 'Cats got a taste of the big-time last season as Head Football Coach Luke Fickell lead his squad to an 11-2 mark, culminating in a very nice bowl win over Virginal Tech. The Cincinnati fans took notice and the players seem like they want much more of the fun they experienced in 2018. Their '19 schedule is packed with opportunity as the UCLA Bruins, Ohio State Buckeyes and UCF Knights are all part of the competition!

  • Ohio State 2019 Football Strength Clinic Wrap-up

Last month's Ohio State was a definite success as the college sports powerhouse opened up the doors to their brand new Gene Smith Strength & Conditioning Center for the 2019 edition of their strength and conditioning clinic. Strength Coach and Clinic Director Jeff Uhlenhake was quite pleased with the turnout of 165 coaches, trainers and therapists in attendance. With Ohio State personnel, clinic speakers, vendors and of course ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power all in attendance, over two-hundred people were able to take in the strength training atmosphere where the Buckeyes hone their crafts. Here's the complete photo update and some more videos, too

  • Michigan State Football Strength Clinic Wrap-up

    IMG_9172
Once again, Michigan State does not disappoint. The MSU Spartans' 12th Annual Strength & Conditioning Clinic is a testament to the success and longevity of their head football coach Mark Dantonio. When Dantonio arrived back in 2006, following a successful stint at the Cincinnati Bearcats, he made personnel moves that retained head strength coach Ken Mannie and assistant Mike Vorkapich. With that move complete, Mannie and Vorkapich plowed straight ahead and even planned a strength and conditioning seminar to educate coaches, teachers, trainers and physical therapists on the intricacies of designing and implementing football and sport strength training programs. As word got out about the first clinic, the wheels began turning to have a second one. A short time ago, the 12th one came to an end and they are certainly going to plan more. In fact, Coach Vorkapich already has a couple speakers inked. The wide array of diverse clinic speakers that share their knowledge with the clinicians is one of the things that make this annual event huge. And, with clinic master of ceremonies, Ted Lambrinides, serving as the point man, things roll very efficiently. Ted has a wealth of information from both academic and field experience disciplines. He's a long time sport scientist who's become one of the leading experts on GPS player tracking data analytics for both NFL and Power Five collegiate teams. Dr. Ted, who completed his PhD work at Ohio State back in the 1980s, has become an multi-year cornerstone as emcee at the clinic, operating with smooth efficiency and is always available to share information during the breaks.

This year, Mike Vorkapich brought in a diverse group of high impact speakers. For one, Reno Saccoccia, spoke on developing a championship program, which he's done at Steubenville (Ohio) High School Big Red Football. The "Big Red" are really BIG in Ohio High School Football where Reno has built  a perennial powerhouse program. Coach Saccoccia also happens to be Coach Ken Mannie's brother-in-law, so he probably gets access to plenty of football strength training program tips!
Coach Kevin Yoxall of TCU and Auburn fame, explained about running an ideal summer strength & conditioning program and that type of information is just the kind of thing that many of the clinic attendees wanted to gather.
Then, Bill Foran (Miami Heat), who is a strength and conditioning Hall of Fame inductee, told some interesting stories about his days as Michigan State's first graduate assistant strength coach. After a stint at Washington State, he then experienced some big success at the University of Miami Hurricanes.where he worked under Head Coach Jimmy Johnson. Bill came up with some changes down there, especially with their conditioning tests that . Then, he was courted by the Miami Heat and actually was hired by Billy Cunningham with just a little Wilt Chamberlain influence! He also got to work with their legendary head coach Pat Riley and had plenty of really good stories about his career with the Heat. He also drove home the point on these four things:

    • Sleep
    • Hydration
    • Less Sugar
    • Vitamin D

All good stuff! He followed that with some video of the Miami Heat in training.
That lead to the next clinic speaker from the University of Cincinnati, Brady Collins, a spirited and passionate strength coach who had a huge impact on football coach Luke Fickell's 2018 Bearcat 11-2 squad. This team was the surprise turnaround story of college football in 2018 and finished at #23 in the final rankings. Coach Collin's talk centered on his training mantra of 'relentless effort' and how the Bearcats, a team that finished its season with a huge victory over Virginia Tech in the military bowl, go about getting that accomplished.  Brady has a good sense of the history of strength training for football and paid homage to the NFL's first strength coach Kim Wood, who saw the trainings' first priority as "to develop the raw material of the body". The Cincinnati Bearcat Director of Football Sports Performance also covered how to maximize and develop player potential and also taught some of the Cincinnati squat protocols and progressions. not a bad year for this knowledgeable. young strength coach.
The final speaker, Caleb Grummet spoke on self discipline and left us with the following thoughts:
    1. Fight the good fight
    2. Avoid complacency
3.Stay pure and avoid being watered down
    4.Always know your WHY

In his closing remarks, Coach Ken Mannie wrapped up the clinic with some thoughts on a word that keeps surfacing by many of the speakers, and that's TRUST. It's a difficult thing to cultivate because a strength and conditioning coach needs a ton of it. Coaches not only need to develop trust with the athletes whom they develop, but they also have to strive everyday to have trust that flourishes among their staff and all of the sport coaches,as well. So, Mannie advised clinic attendees to:

    • Learn as much as you can
    • Separate yourself from the pack
    • Work at your job like it's the only one that you'll ever have
    • Love what you're doing
    • Get well-versed in technology
    • Develop professionalism: mannerisms, expertise, inspire people
