  • ASAP Podcast Episode #277 with Georgia State Strength Coach Scott Holshopple

IMG_9814It's in the heart of Atlanta where Georgia State University's Head Strength Coach Scott Holsopple keeps the Panthers on the path. Before going to Kansas, Holsopple spent five years at Florida, where he worked as the top assistant with the Gator football program. At Florida, Holsopple worked under the highly-regarded Mickey Marotti, who is now the assistant athletic director for football sports performance for national champion Ohio State. During Holsopple’s time at Florida, the Gators won the 2008 BCS National Championship while compiling a 50-17 record in his five years. Florida appeared in five straight bowl games with two BCS bowl appearances, and Holsopple helped mentor 18 athletes who went on to be drafted into the NFL, including six first-round draft picks. Holsopple spent the 2006-07 season working with the men’s basketball program at Kentucky. That followed a six-year stint at Marquette, where he began working with the men’s basketball program in the fall of 2000 before he was elevated to head strength and conditioning coach for his final five years. In that position, Holsopple was responsible all 14 of the Golden Eagles’ Division I athletic programs. He worked with Dwayne Wade as the future NBA star led Marquette to the 2003 NCAA Final Four. Before going to Marquette, Holsopple served as a strength and conditioning assistant at Penn State, his alma mater, where he helped develop and implement a comprehensive, year-round strength, conditioning and agility program for the school’s 28 athletic teams. Holsopple began his career in the field as an intern at Notre Dame under Marotti. He also served the strength and conditioning coordinator at Ken Chertow’s Olympian Wrestling Camp. A native of Happy Valley, Pa., Holsopple earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Penn State in 2000. He earned All-America recognition as a boxer at Penn State.

I was able to catch up with Scott, a featured speaker at the 2016 Battleground Academy (Tenn) Hammer Strength Clinic, and he did not disappoint! He gave a very nice presentation and unfurled a ton of ideas to help motivate players and coaches as they go about the grind that is college football. In the podcast, you'll sense the passion and love Coach Holsopple has for his profession…and get a few tips for running a strength program. • Mississippi State Bulldogs’ Strength Training Update with Coach Rick Court

IMG_0614Last week's trip to Atlanta, Georgia went very well! Traffic through the mountains was not a problem and stopping in Knoxville gave a chance to have some more Dead End Barbeque. The stuff is always serious good at the University of Tennessee Strength Clinic…. and it was equally good this time, too. While I'm on the restaurant subject, the next morning was a great opportunity for a late breakfast in Marietta, Georgia at The Cafe 33. This place is a must for a great cup of coffee and the build your own omelette! From there it was on to ATL. We did about a four mile walk through downtown and then settled in for some fine southern cooking at Mary Macs Tea Room.
After that, it was time to head to the Georgia Tech Strength Clinic. That's where we met up Rick Court, one of the event's main speakers, and recorded this podcast.
Be sure to be in Cincinnati Ohio at Kim Wood's FOOTBALL STRENGTH Clinic #5 in June! Coach Court will be a featured speaker for that clinic!

  • Georgia Tech Strength Clinic Wrap-up + Photos

6a00d83453dfa869e201bb07ae6ae5970d-450wiWe have just returned from another great strength training clinic trip. Finally, we headed south to Atlanta where the weather was unreal. And, it's always a treat to visit John Sisk and the Georgia Tech Ramblin' Wreck Training Center. Prior to the Friday night clinic start,  I added a great high protein meal and a serious dining experience at Mary Macs Tea Room. After about a four mile walk, the southern cooking definitely hit the spot.  From there, I was ready to relax and get some training pointers……but then, Clinic Director Lon Record introduced Speaker/clinician Rick Court of Mississippi State University. Relax mode was officially over. You've seen him, Brady Collins and Nick Savage in this ASAP MSU Segment & Video.  Court explained in fine detail the methods and strategies of his MSU "Hail State" Bulldogs "atypical" training regimen. The fiery strength coach did not hold back and did an encore presentation during the Saturday Demonstration Segment of the clinic.
Overall, it was a very nice, well organized clinic with some very educating speakers.

Click the photo below for more pics from the clinic and the very impressive Georgia Institute of Technology, where one in every six graduates of the prestigious school are millionaires!

JohnsonAllan5074bStarting officially in September 2015, East Tennessee State University will once again be fielding a football team after a discontinuance of the program in 2003. They have a schedule, a new stadium and and an off-season strength and conditioning program that's going full steam ahead.
