  • ASAP at 2014 Michigan Football Strength Clinic Highlights

    Mich
Former Michigan linebacker Jibreel Black suggested to ASAP Director of Sports Science Ted Lambrinides and me that when in Ann Arbor Michigan, we have breakfast at Benny's Family Dining…and that it's a sure bet.  And, since Jibreel is 6'2" and 285 pounds, you have to figure that he knows a little bit about where to get a good meal! Well, Ted and I had some custom made omelets that definitely hit the spot and got us the proper nutrition needed to attend the 2014 Michigan Football Strength Clinic.

    Gonlue
This year's speakers included speed coach Tom Shaw, strength guy Dan John, Michigan Athletics' nutritionist Joel Toloro, and Wake Forest strength coach Jim Smith. The clinic kicked off with a keynote talk by Michigan Football Coach Brady Hoke who was followed by Michigan Football's Director of Strength and Conditioning Aaron Wellman. In addition, Kevin Vanderbush and Etan Reeve served as clinicians.
We got some pics and video while there…check it out!

And by the way….Thanks for the tip Jibreel!!

Just before spring ball started at the University of Tennessee Strength Clinic, we checked in with the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Dave Lawson. As you'll hear, things are going good in year two. Lawson, who came in with Head Football Coach Butch Jones, is very optimistic with the football team's progress in Knoxville. A very talented incoming recruiting class coupled with Coach Lawson's organized approach to preparing for the game of football indicates nothing but bright side for the Vols.

Dr Murray and the ASAP Sports Science Team convened last week in Chicago, Illinois where we were brought up to speed on the cutting edge technology app known as the Aegis Shield. Aegis Sheild® helps keep athletes clean and in the game by providing an extensive, up-to-date database of products and supplements. Just scan a product's barcode and get complete information on the ingredients of the product. and if those ingredients are in compliance with the different organizations' protocols.

Sports organizations such as collegiate athletics, NFL, MLB, and NASCAR have their own Banned Substance Lists (BSLs) that apply to athletes in those sports leagues. Aegis Shield has 7 BSLs so consumers can choose the most appropriate list…and then make appropriate decisions on whether, or not,  to use the product.

Aegis Shield is a website and mobile app designed to evaluate the ingredient lists on dietary supplements to help athletes at all levels of competition avoid banned substances. Aegis Shield is also an easy-to-use, reliable and trusted tool for sports health professionals such as athletic trainers, strength coaches, dietitians, and sports physicians who athletes trust implicitly to provide reliable information about dietary supplements and banned substances. For amateur or younger athletes who may not have frequent access to sports health professionals, Aegis Shield is also a valuable service for coaches, parents and others who are involved in helping athletes train and prepare for competition.

With the same fervor as he had when preparing his players for the collisions and physical contact demanded by the game of football, former Cincinnati Bengal Strength Coach Kim Wood is preparing for his upcoming training clinic. He refuses to quit his mission. He has the passion and desire to help preserve the game that he dearly loves.  In fact, more than ever, his mission is to make sure the strength and conditioning field does not lose focus of its obligation. Protect the Players.  In the '70s, Wood became a forerunner in the  National Football League, establishing strength training and conditioning for football players. Bengals founder and head coach Paul Brown, who modernized professional football with a systematized philosophy, hired Kim Wood in an effort to assure that other NFL teams did not beat him to the punch. In the '80s, Wood led by instilling a toughness character into his training program….. and the program worked. With Head Coach Forrest Gregg and later Sam Wyche, Kim Wood trained squads that made trips to two Super Bowls.
Wood has been a regular and popular ASAP Podcast Guest

Coach Wood's other vision to accomplish is an unofficial association of strength professional networking: Ideas being shared, philosophies, methods and techniques being exhanged. So, if you're an aspiring strength coach, you could have networked and been advised and had personal discussions with the brightest coaches in strength training. All under one roof. So make plans to attend his Football Strength training clinic in June and learn from some of the true training legends….the NFL's first full time strength coach!

  • Tennessee Football Strength Clinic Wrap-up + Photos/Video

IMG_20140228_174256In Knoxville last week at The 31st Annual University of Tennessee Strength & Conditioning Clinic, it was basically all training talk where nearly 180 coaches, from all levels and divisions, convened to learn, absorb and share ideas on administering a strength program. This was one of the partnered Hammer Strength Clincs, and Lon Record & Life Fitness are known for disseminating real training information to coaches in the strength field. Certainly, few programs are going to possess the tool box (see photos) that the Vols' Head Strength Coach Dave Lawson gets to use for training the storied program down by Rocky Top, but each coach in attendance could leave that clinic with a new idea or technique. In addition, there's the opportunity to network at a well attended clinic like that…..or develop new professional relationships to last a lifetime.

TENN Group shotBesides all the great weightroom stuff there in Knoxville, Coach Lawson has developed a very knowledgeable and motivating strength staff to implement the detailed and well designed program. Mike Szerszen, Brandon Myles, Ike Brown and Greg Adamson all play huge roles in Head Football Coach Butch Jones' vision of returning Tennessee Volunteer Football back to national prominence.

After a hearty breakfast of an 'Ultimate Omelet' and a stack of french toast at Pete's Coffee Shop and Restaurant in downtown Knoxville…. just a long touchdown pass from the Hilton, ASAP Sports Science Director Ted Lambrinides and I made our way back to the UT Vols Strength Clinic: DAY TWO. That's where Coach Butch Jones kicked off the Saturday morning program with a nice presentation and message about developing your own personal brand and that it's the "inches that make the champion".

      0

From there it was Dave Lawson and Mike Szerszen, who detailed the Vols' program and then Dave Rankin of Alcoa High School gave a well received talk which was followed by Mike Gentry of Virginia Tech as he explained the details of how he trains the Hokies. On the previous night,  UT Football Strength Coach Mike Szerszen and Georgia Tech Director of Player Development John Sisk were the headline speakers. Visit our website soon for podcasts with John Sisk and Mike Gentry.

All in all, a very nice weekend in Tennessee at the Anderson Training Center and we're definitely looking forward to the 32nd Annual event!!
