  • Michigan State Football Strength Training Featured Update 2015

Step by step, Head Football Coach Mark Dantonio has been slowly and meticulously changing the face of Michigan State Football from what it was when he arrived in 2007, to what it is today… a nationally recognized college football program.  And a solid brand. With the recent Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl victories, and the big home win at Spartan Stadium against the Oregon Ducks last week, things are looking really good for the Green & White in East Lansing.

The strength and conditioning program there is top notch and directed by one of the most well respected strength coaches in all of football….that would be Ken Mannie. And, as Mark Dantonio told me, Mannie is, "the heart and soul of Michigan State Football."

Here's some recent videos from the training at East Lansing:

  • West Virginia Mountaineers Women’s Basketball Strength Training

Here's a glimpse of some of the leg work that the West Virginia Mountaineer Women's Basketball team worked on when ASAP made a visit to one of college basketball's top training centers. The WVU basketball complex is an architectural masterpiece that houses much of the rich traditions of the Mountaineers' basketball history. Of course, one of basketball's all time greats, Jerry West, starred there. And, their head coach, Bob Huggins, also proudly wore the Gold and Blue.

The workout was designed and supervised by WVU Women's Basketball Strength Coach Brian Whiting. Here's a look!

  • South Carolina Gamecocks Basketball: LOG BAR FRONT SQUAT

A recent ASAP visit to the University of South Carolina with Basketball Strength Coach Scott Greenawalt found the Gamecocks hitting it hard on a leg day. We’ve shared some past video from Columbia, SC…like last 2014 and of course this RDL variation. Don’t forget the Dumbell Step-ups Video.  Front squats with the log bar looks like a great way to teach proper form. Things just seem to fall into proper place. Here’s a few cell phone pics. Our good friend, John Wood,  at Functional Hand Strength does logbar sales, in case you’re interested!

  • ASAP Radar Watch! Tennessee Vols

IMG_0771aCollege football teams have their countdown clocks swirling right now! The Buckeyes seem to be ironing out their quarterback derby. Superstar Braxton Miller is about to cause fits for opposing Defensive Coordinators as he settles in to a position change. Those Texas teams didn't go away… TCU and Baylor have some serious business that they want to deal with. The Oregon Ducks lost their Heisman winning quarterback to the NFL and have an early season appointment in East Lansing against at a Michigan State team that has a chip on it's shoulder…..They really do! And down in Starkville Dak Prescott and those Mississippi State Bulldogs will attempt to get cowbells heard much like they did last year as they spent six weeks at the #1 ranking position. The two teams in the desert are sure to decide some big things this year but the Arizona Wildcats do have to travel to Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe this season against Arizona State! And, what's going to happen in Ann Arbor? The Big House will be host to some big changes that were made at Michigan back in January. Here we go!
    IMG_0777a

Oh yeah, and one other team that definitely needs mention is the Tennessee Vols!  It's been really interesting to watch the slow transformation…. 'brick by brick'….  that Butch Jones has engineered. His exciting quarterback, Joshua Dobbs– an aerospace engineering major- and that hard hitting defense should really get Rocky Top going a whole lot along the Tennessee River in Knoxville! Better make reservations at Calhoun's a little sooner this year. Especially when Oklahoma comes to town. Wow!
Tennessee…. back in the national conversation in 2015.

    Here's a couple of videos that we shot with Head Strength Coach Dave Lawson;

  • Mississippi State Bulldogs’ Strength Training with Coach Rick Court

    IMG_26488
Our 2015 ASAP Strength Tour led us once again to America's Deep South. It's a far cry from Vermont or even somewhere like Cincinnati. And, it's downright hot and humid down there! But that doesn't seem to phase the Mississippi State Bulldogs at all. In fact, they seem to thrive in it. One thing is for certain, their opponents better be training for those types of conditions if they're planning a trip to Starkville. Anyway, we caught up with Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Rick Court, the guy who masterminds the training regimen for the 'Dawgs. Coach donned a long sleeved white Adidas climate control shirt underneath his official Mississippi State Bulldogs Football shirt. He comes out of the gates at full speed and doesn't stop to catch his breath until a group workout ends. Then, he recharges and is ready to go for the next group. He flat out loves the strength coaching profession. We have known about him since his G.A. days at Bowling Green, then Toledo and San Diego State. Ohio State….. and now he's settled in at Mississippi State. Coach Court has a full grasp of how to prepare college football players and is always willing to share his knowledge of training with other coaches and those involved with college athletics. In our ASAP Podcast, Coach Court tells us what the Bulldogs have been up to, information about today's workout session and how they are prepping for the 2015 campaign.

  • ASAP Visit: Ohio State Buckeyes PHOTO Shoot

    IMG_2527tw IMG_2454a

Our trip up I-71N to Columbus went well until we came to a thirty minute virtual standstill. We never did see any reason for it…but that's the way it sometimes goes on the ASAP Summer road tour.
Anyway, we arrived early for the 5:45a.m. workout with the first group. There wasn't any student traffic on Olentangy Road at that hour, with the exception of some earlybird Ohio State Football squad members negotiating the rain and night darkness as they turned into the venerable Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Coach Mick Marotti and his staff were well prepared as the Buckeye players started filing in. Coach Kenny Parker, Phil Matusz , Jeff Uhlenhake and newcomer Brady Collins were all set to go.  As for the players, there's IMG_2462no doubt that this group of Buckeyes will have high expectations and will be making another run at a national championship. So they were ready for more of "The GRIND".

  • Neck Training for Football: Here’s the Why & How

    IMG_0956

    Coach Paul Harker…on the go!

We just checked in on one of Coach Ken Mannie's former players and assistants Paul Harker. Mannie, one of the most renowned in the business, is the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Michigan State Spartans and takes pride in the fact that many of his former staffers meet up with success in their own careers after departing East Lansing. No question that it must be difficult to lose a quality coach….. though it speaks wonders for Mannie's program.
Coach Paul Harker is carrying on the tradition at the "Cradle of Coaches" Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and helping to build a strong Redhawk program. And just this week, Graduate Assistant Coach Niko Palazeti departed the Duffy Daughtery Building where the Spartans train and headed south to Starkville, Mississippi to join Coach Rick Court and the Bulldogs.
Much like Mannie, Paul Harker and Niko Palazeti empahsize neck training!
Check out Niko in action in the video!

Paul Harker appears in some pics in this article that refers to a terrible injury in 1998 to cornerback Amp Campbell. The article is an excerpt  from COACH & ATHLETIC DIRECTOR and written by Coach Ken Mannie. The article clears the air on why neck training is a priority
