    Owings Mills, Maryland August 2013

The ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Tour rolled into Owings Mills, Maryland as the defending World Champion Baltimore Ravens were opening up their 2013Camp.
IMG_5822Their Baltimore Ravens Under Armor Performance Center is the premier facility of it's kind, a 200,000 square foot crown jewel. It has everything….. basically what you'd expect from organization that has been part of the NFL fabric for decades.Team General Manager and Hall of Famer, Ozzie Newsome, has assembled a team and coaching staff that continually contends at the league's highest levels.

Check out all the photos of the Baltimore Ravens Under Armor Performance Facility

So, today's video takes an in-depth look at the Ravens' Strength & Conditioning Program. It's headed by one of the most knowledgeable coaches in the business, someone who's been training NFL players for 29 years. Bob Rogucki. A Head NFL Strength Coach for over twenty years, and now in his sixth year in Baltimore, Rogucki has been working with some of the NFL's most elite players, and earned a Super Bowl Championship ring with the squad last season.

IMG_5902With Rogucki, is Assistant Strength Coach Juney Barnett (photo left), a thirty three year old coach with only bright future ahead! He knows how to implement the training regimen to its fullest…. knowing when to push the players…and when to back off a bit. There's a fine line. Barnett knows it.
Both coaches are MIC'D UP for this Training Camp video session!

  • ASAP Video at Mississippi State University… HAIL STATE

Asap at miss stateTraveling along Mississippi Route 82 Westbound on a recent ASAP Road Trip through the deep south…. down in the heart of the Southeastern Conference ~ the SEC, we ventured over toward Mississippi State University in Starkville MS. It's the home of the Bulldogs and it's what's referred to down there as 'Hail State."  We took the last spur south on Rt 12  and arrived just in time for the afternoon session of that day's second  training camp practice . Head Football Coach Dan Mullen directed the upbeat session during the typical hot August day there. Ice cold Gatorade was everywhere.
Once practice was over, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Matt Balis welcomed ASAP~ Athletic Strength And Power to his gleaming weight room at the Leo Seal Football Complex….and this is one of the more impressive facilities that you'll see anywhere! Click on the photo above for the Mississippi State University strength complex pictures.

Click here for the MSU Dawgs Weight Room Photos

Coach Balis knows a little bit about developing football players! He's done it at the championship level with some great teams at the University of Utah and the University of Florida. He then headed over to the University of Virginia and now anchors the program at MSU. Balis gave us ALL-ACCESS for these photos and this video tour.

Alongside Balis are assistant strength coach Thomas Stallworth who was formerly the head strength coach at both Grambling State University and South Carolina State University. Stallworth was a linebacker at The University of Tennessee Vols during his playing days. Also with Balis, one of our longtime colleagues, Brady Collins, who came over from The University of Kentucky and can be seen throughout this popular ASAP video.

  • ASAP Video: Jammer Rotations with Ohio State S&C Coach Kenny Parker

    Columbus, Ohio

    Part One: Hammer Jammer Rotations

    I
Buckeye cyclen this ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power video, it's evident why Ohio State's Asst AD for Football Sports Performance,Mickey Marotti, made sure to acquire the services of Coach Kenny Parker to the Buckeyes' Strength & Conditioning Staff when the current football coaching staff arrived in Columbus back in January of 2012. Parker, in his second year at Ohio State, is an excellent communicator, motivator and instructor. One of the many assets that he adds to the staff is the fact that he not only has plenty of coaching experience, but he's also played the game. Kenny Parker had the opportunity to play for both Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer at The University of Florida and was a starting defensive tackle for the Gators in '03 & '04. Add in the coaching stints that Parker served at Florida and Murray State University and there's no doubt that that the Buckeyes have a well seasoned, knowledgeable coach that compliments their excellent staff. And, coming soon, we'll have Part Two of this video where Coach Parker instructs the techniques of Lateral Med-ball Explosive Drills and some of the Sandbag/Weight Plate Drills that they use at Ohio State.

  • Detroit Lions Weight Room & Training Camp Photos

    Lions cover
Even in a northern state like Michigan, morning temperatures in the 50's and brisk winds don't blow through that often in mid August during the Detroit Lions Training Camp at their Allen Park, Michigan training center. But, that's the way it was on that day as I sported about five T-shirrts. Players brought out the cool weather gear and Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Jason Arapoff definitely emphasized proper warm-up on this particular morning. The Detroit Lions put a good practice together despite the chill and ASAP got a close-up look at guys like Calvin Johnson, Matt Stafford, Michael Bush and the big rookie Larry Warford.

Following practice, we headed inside for some pics of the expansive weight training center that's overseen by Arapoff and his Assistant Strength Coach Ted Rath. These two have the Lions in good shape as they make their run at the NFC North crown for 2013.

Here's the photos…. just click here or on the Detroit Lions helmet above. Also, be sure to check back on our ASAP website and ASAP Twitter feed toward the end of the season for updates on their Detroit Lions Strength & Conditioning Clinic which is usually held in February….and one of the better and most well organized clincs that you'll attend.

  • University of South Carolina: Scott Greenawalt

Pic 59_edited-1Following a 5:30 wake-up call, I headed out of the comfy confines of The Inn at USC, which is right on the campus of The University of South Carolina (Columbia,SC). In order to get a lay of the land, I got hustling on a four mile campus walk. The buildings and history at this great institution are steeped in tradition…and the school has been educating students there for over 200 years. It's worth a visit just to walk the campus area of class buildings and residence halls. It's really like a deep south botanical nature preserve.

However, that's not where Gamecocks Basketball Strength Coach Scott Greenawalt spends his time! He's over at The Colonial Life Arena…and that's where the basketball strength & conditioning program takes place. Towering mossy oak trees or palmetto plants are not the main attraction…. it's multi-purpose racks, barbells and specialized strength training equipment that takes precedence there. And, of course the home basketball court of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

In today's educational video Coach Greenawalt explains the basics of the Dumbell Step-Up Exercise.

  • Temple University Football Strength Complex Pictorial

    IMG_5703

After a hearty breakfast at the Philly Diner, we made our way over to I-95 then I-676 into downtown Philadelphia to the intersection of Diamond St. and N. 10th…. and that's where the football strength training center is located on the campus of Temple University. A school where football has been woven into the fabric since 1894.
And, within that building, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Jeremy Scott (photo right) and Assistant Strength Coach Shelton Gaffney (photo left) are making sure the Temple Owls are grinding away as they prep for another big year. The schedule is formidable…packed with familiar football powers that dot the national landscape. There's no time to take days off!  It's all about getting into this newly completed weight room and making gains. Click here or on the Temple "T" photo above for an inside glimpse at the training center.

  • St. Joseph’s University Strength Training Weight Room Philadelphia, PA

    Hawks
During a recent trip to Philadelphia, I had the opportunity to check out Saint Joesph's University and the Hawks Strength Training Center. The school has a very good basketball tradition under Head Baskeball Coach Phil Martelli, who's eighteen year tenure has produced a top conference contender and national presence.

Here's a few photos of the weight room, and Hagan Arena, where Head Strength Coach Brian Bingaman preps the Hawks for flight. Just click here...or on either photo!

  • Wisconsin Football Strength… Evan Simon and Jamil Walker

IMG_5426On a recent trip to Madison, Head Football Strength Coach Evan Simon rolled out the red carpet for ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power. I was able to get the behind the scenes look at the Badger Football Strength Program…. and a taste of what their Badger Performance Nutrition Center is like, too! They're not short on dairy products up there…and that leads to some great tasting smoothies….just what the squad needs after grinding away in the newly renovated football strength complex built within Camp Randall Stadium.

Once the players were gone, we enlisted Assistant Strength Coach Jamil Walker… a former standout Badger himself…. to demonstrate a few of the proper techniques on several exercises. In this video, Jamil performs the Land Mine exercise that's a good one for core strength development. Meanwhile, Evan Simon explains how to complete the exercise properly. There's also a few looks at some of the Camp Randall surroundings… pretty good motivators!
