Last week's travels took me to East Lansing, Michigan to check in on what Sparty was up to, how the team's summer training program under the direction of MSU Strength & Conditioning Director Ken Mannie is going……. and to do a few sets of chain bench presses and also the Rogers Athletic Pendulum Seated Squat Pro. Here's a few pics.
However, when you find yourself in the Duffy Daughtery Football Building, you can always count on seeing the head football coach out and about. On this particular day, Coach "D" was making his rounds at the huge high school football camp that was taking place at MSU. And, that's where I was able to catch up with Mark Dantonio as he took a time-out for today's ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Podcast

You won't find nicer college campus anywhere! Miami University, Oxford, Ohio 45056. It's Redhawk Country and home to "the Cradle of Coaches." Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Ara Parseghian, Paul Brown, Weeb Eubank, Jim Tressel…the list goes on. They all coached football at Miami. Don Treadwell is the coach today, a former Miami wide receiver himself. He's got a heck of a coaching pedigree and was propelled to fame when he took over head coaching duties at Michigan State following a Mark Dantonio heart attack. Treadwell returned to his alma mater a year ago with hopes of winning the Mid American Conference championship soon.
Nestled between Millett Hall and Yager Stadium is the weight training complex, the Walter Gross & Family Athlete Development Center, and it is headed by Paul Harker, the Director of Strength & Conditioning. And that's who took a timeout between Redhawk training sessions to give me and former Redskin, Ken Hauck (Miami '76), an exceptional tour.
This facility was recently retooled with a complete line-up of Rogers Athletic Pendulum Strength Training Equipment. I definitely give this stuff a thumbs up. If this was Facebook, I would click the LIKE button for sure!

Head Strength Coach Dave Lawson and strength & conditioning staff Michael Szerszen and Luke Day are at it full go right now preparing the University of Cincinnati Bearcats football team for the upcoming 2012 season. I witnessed 'Legs…Back and Biceps" training as the 'Cats clawed their way through a heavy squat day.

Former Miami DL Ken Hauck (photo right) joined me last week as we checked in on the Miami University Redhawks in Oxford, Ohio. Hauck was quite impressed as he surveyed the updated facilities that have changed since his era. Back in the 70s, weight rooms were not quite the collegiate strength training complexes that are the norm today…. though the training regimen, under then Head Coach Bill Mallory, helped Miami beat the Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks in consecutive bowl game appearances. Not too bad! Mallory… part of that "Cradle of Coaches".
Here's a few pics from the trip that includes some of the "Cradle of Coaches" statues and plaques. Soon, I'll have the video tour of the Walter Gross & Family Athlete Development Center, which is their state of the art training complex. That's where Director of Strength & Conditioning, Paul Harker, works his craft. Harker played football at Michigan State, then furthered his studies as a Graduate Assistant strength coach under Coach Ken Mannie. Now under Head Football Coach Don Treadwell, Harker will try to push the Redhawks harder and higher.
With the Walter Gross Athlete Development Center in the background, Paul Harker supervises a morning conditioning program for the football squad at Yager Stadium.
