  • ASAP Podcast with TEAMBUILDR Founder Hewitt Tomlin

TeamBuildr-ASAP-horizontal (1)bzTEAMBUILDR, one of our longtime ASAP sponsors, has continued to make some great strides in the strength training and conditioning business, even during a COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, their industry leading online strength & conditioning software has become even more of a game changer for strength coaches everywhere.  While the Tennessee Vols, West Virginia Mountaineers and the Golden State Warriors strength and conditioning programs have been major players who have reaped the rewards of using TEAMBUILDR, many other high schools, college programs and professional teams are now under the TEAMBUILDR umbrella. And as a matter of fact, the most fiscally successful and most prominent collegiate athletic program in all of sports, the Ohio State University Buckeyes, have signed on with Hewitt Tomlin's TEAMBUILDR, as Coach Mickey Marotti is delving into the software.

In the ASAP Podcast, our initial attempt at a ZOOM recording, TEAMBUILDR founder Hewitt Tomlin explains the many advantages of using this powerful coaching tool, which is becoming even more beneficial during a shutdown that has left a strength coaching fraternity scrambling for ways to train their athletes from a distance.

Notre Dame Football Strength Coach Matt Balis

It's strength clinic time and there are several reasons to get to one. For one, I've never been to a clinic where I did not return home with something newly added to my coaching toolbox. Fresh content! For example:

    • Some new techniques and coaching points to use when coaching your athletes.
    • Or, another way to incorporate certain exercises or lifts into the scope of the training program.
    • Are my athletes too young to try that lift and will it require too much time and coaching to stir it into the entire training program?
    • Should our program be a three day per week workout or a four day split? What's Coach Brady Collins' philosophy at Cincinnati Bearcats?
    • Where should we place our Pit Shark® for optimal use?
    • What are the pros and cons of choosing a POWERLIFT rack as opposed to the Sorinex model?
    • How can I educate the entire coaching staff at our school so that we're on the same page?
    • What is Coach Kenn's purpose for coaching the athletic position?
    • IMG_4998Our players need more toughness! How does Coach Marotti instill this with his Buckeyes/
    • Yoga??? It's definitely a piece that needs to be incorporated into our program. How can we add this into our workouts?
    • How does Coach Ken Mannie develop his Spartan "earned, never given" philosophy?
    • My star running back plays basketball AND baseball. Now what???
    • Our athletic director approved our new TRX TRAINING order. How does Coach Matusz choose which TRX exercise to use on a given day?
    • I never want to move those racks and machines again!!! Never again! What makes REGUPOL ® Sports Flooring by SPECATHLETIC the best?
    • How often does Coach Dave Lawson suggest that our players squat HEAVY?
    • What are the features that make TEAMBUILDR®, the premier online strength & conditioning software, a terrific concept for training evaluation, standard and goal setting & athlete performance tracking.
    • How did strength coach Dr.Ted Lambrinides prepare a young Kentucky Wildcats Basketball squad for their NCAA National Championship run in 2012, a team that include, now NBA superstar Anthony Davis?
    • Basketball is a long season, how does long time veteran strength coach Shaun Brown keep his West Virginia Mountaineers Basketball squad

  • ASAP Strength Podcast with Cincinnati Bengals (ret) Strength Coach Kim Wood

6a00d83453dfa869e201bb09988b5d970d-300wiCoach Kim Wood spent thirty years as a coach with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was hired by the venerable founder and first coach of the @Bengals Paul Brown. Keep in mind that this was during the Bengals' hey day, as the team appeared in two Super Bowls, one of which San Francisco 49er stars Joe Montana and Jerry Rice led hall of fame type performances in the final minutes to take the win out of the grasp of the Cincinnati Bengals, quarterback Boomer Esiason and their head coach Sam Wyche. That left Kim Wood to reload the weightroom jukebox at the "spartan" Spinney Field weightroom and rearrange the power racks, wooden jerk boxes and Hammer Strength machines.
Coach Wood has been a regular guest for the ASAP Strength Podcast features and his most popular podcasts (all-time) PLAY tally continue to keep a narrow lead over Alex Marvez, SiriusXM NFL Radio host and Pro Football Hall of Fame voter. Kind of a big deal!

In this podcast, Kim Wood reminisces about the former Bengals coach Sam Wyche who recently succumbed to complications with melanoma.

  • The 2020 Michigan State Spartans Annual Strength & Conditioning Clinic

    Michigan State Strength Clinic: February 7 & 8th 2020

    MSU2020 Clinic clickthru

It's that time again to plan for professional development. Michigan State Football Strength & Conditioning, is presently prepping for its annual S & C Clinic that's to be conducted on February 7th and 8th of 2020.
Clinic Director Mike Vorkapich, Spartan Assistant Strength Coach, has assembled quite a strong list of clinicians that includes Ted Lambrinides who will serve as the Master of Ceremonies at The MSU Spartans Annual Strength & Conditioning Clinic at Michigan State University on February 7th and 8th 2020. Ted has spoken from coast to coast over the last 38 years on everything under the umbrella of sports and exercise science. Before embarking on his professional career, Lambrinides completed undergraduate, graduate and post graduate studies at The Ohio State University. He served for nine years as a collegiate strength and conditioning coach for the Buckeyes, his alma mater, and at The University of Kentucky. He's been been called upon as a guest speaker to many major college football programs where he's given streetwise and upfront talks to athletes about "Drugs, Supplements and Personal Conduct".

Ted was able to continue sports science research as he coordinated the Exercise Physiology Department at Thomas More College….tweaking his methodologies while training many of the top athletes in the Greater Cincinnati Tri-State Region. As a sports performance consultant, Coach Lambrinides has provided expertise on performance training and ergogenic aids to numerous collegiate and professional football and basketball programs. He's frequented practically every SEC and Big Ten program and most NFL teams as well.

I have been to the MSU Spartan Strength & Conditioning Clinics since their inception and somehow they make it better and even more informative every year. This year's line up promises to be another special event for strength training professionals, students, trainers, physical therapists and personal trainers. It's an excellent opportunity for professional development and updating necessary CEU requirements for CSCCa and NSCA.  Clinic Director Mike Vorkapich does an exceptional job organizing and getting the clinic off the ground. The speaking line-up is always top notch and this year will be no different as Head MSU Spartans Strength Coach Ken Mannie, Coach Lambrinides and the clinic staff will get attendees motivated to return to their respective sites with a renewed perspective for establishing updated goals for their programs.

The clinic takes place at the Clara Bell Smith Academic Center right across from Spartan Stadium. It's a comfortable, climate controlled auditorium style learning environment with desk format to place electronic learning devices and laptops and notebooks. The practical "lab work" takes place in the Spartan Weight Room within Duffy Daugherty Building.

From our most recent site visit to Wake Forest University, here's a few pics and some video from that trip. The Demon Deacs are settling in at their new facility on their beautiful campus in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. That's where Coach Brandon Hourigan and his hard working staff of Chad Bari, Nick Zinani, Chris Jones, Brendan Nave work their craft of getting the Deacs ready for Saturday afternoon performances and a lot of help from David Bass who is on the Olympic side, as well.
