  • ASAP Podcast with Ellington Darden

6a00d83453dfa869e201116861dc8f970c-800wi He's written over 70 books on strength training, bodybuilding, exercise and diet. Dr. Ellington Darden has been researching, training and writing about training for over forty years. Now, at almost 68 years old… he's still at it. More research… more books planned! (It looks as though he's never missed a workout) So it comes as no surprise that El Darden found himself in Cincinnati, Ohio last week for former Cincinnati Bengals' strength coach Kim Wood's "Meeting of the Tribes" Strength Training clinic.

I was able to catch up with Dr. Darden for today's podcast. Of course, his most recent book, titled "The New Bodybuilding for Old School Results" is available and a great addition to anyone's training library. Darden has a website…. www.DrDarden.com and one can find lots of training information, a forum and info on how to get a copy of his book, too. Just click on the player (gray bar) below or the ASAP Podcast Logo to download.

  • The Jim Flanagan Podcasts Part One & Two

Flanagan If you're into strength training and you find yourself in Orlando, Florida…. you have to get in contact with Big Jim Flanagan. Jim's been in the fitness and strength business for over 40 years! Basically, he's seen it all. All of the trends….changes, for good or bad. Yet throughout all of the years, Flanagan has stuck by his guns and hasn't veered off course for the latest "workout of the month". Jim knows the principles of exercise physiology and put the information to work with people like Arthur Jones, the creator of the Nautilus machines and Dr. El Darden, an exercise physiologist, body builder, and author of a multitude of books and manuals on strength training.
Del frisco's Today, he's the director of operations for one of Orlando's favorite restaurants and top steakhouse… Del Frisco's Prime Steak & Lobster. How popular? Let's just say that the restaurant had one thousand reservations for New Year's Eve!!!!!
If that's not enough, he's also a distributor of Med-X Strength Training Equipment. And, as for working out, he owns one of the finest home gyms known to mankind. The gym has modern, state-of-the-art equipment and some refurbished original Nautilus machines. But, what really sets the home gym apart from others is the hundreds of photographs and posters…most autographed (with a personal note to Jim) by an incredible variety of famous people from all walks of life.  And each photo tells its own story… as told by Jim Flanagan.
Before Jim and I sat down for the recording session of today's ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Podcast, we stopped to eat at one of Jim's favorite diners: Shannon's Diner. The Soup of the day for that particular Friday was "Black-Eyed Pea/ Vegetable" which I had a large bowl full with a hamburger. A special recipe hamburger and the meat is ground fresh in the kitchen by the chef. I've got to tell you…. this is probably the best hamburger that I've had in the last twenty-five years. Therefore, Shannon's Diner gets ASAP Approval!  In fact, I'm planning another trip to Orlando just to go back!  Shane Also, I need to get back there so I can train with Jim Flanagan at his home training center and watch a good western movie while recovering! (Jim's an avid western movie buff).Enjoy today's podcast.

  • ASAP Podcast interview with Ken Leistner Part One

_lei0181ed_3 When he’s not seeing one of his patients at his chiropractic practice, Dr. Ken Leistner eats, sleeps, writes about and dreams about physical training. Known for his extremely intense training sessions, "Dr. Ken" practices what he preaches. This 60 year old eccentric training machine claims to have the maturity level of a 19 year old. Just a few years ago, Ken barbell squatted 407 lbs. for an unbelievable 23….yes, that’s 23…. perfectly executed repetitions!! And study the photos, this is not a behemoth, nor performance-drug-enhanced monster. Ken tipped the scales at somewhere close to 160 lbs. when he performed that set.

In the past, when he hasn’t been training, he’s been writing about training in publications like "Physical Development", "H.I.T. Newsletter", "HardTraining", "Powerlifting~USA" and his own, "The Steel Tip Newsletter". He’s also an entertaining speaker at strength and conditioning clinics.

And, when he’s not squatting or hoisting large objects like say, an engine block, he may be training with the kids and youth from his neighborhood…or a long list of collegiate and professional athletes whom he’s trained.

Dr. Ken worked on and off for Nautilus creator Arthur Jones and trained in the Deland, Florida training center in the 1970’s that was to become the Nautilus Sportsmedicine empire….where he met up with Ellington Darden, Kim Wood, Dan Riley and many others.
Lately, Ken has helped in the design of what’s known as the
LOGBAR…which is a very interesting piece of strength equipment that can be acquired through www.functionalhandstrength.com, a company owned by Kim Wood’s son, John Wood.

ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power caught up with Dr Leistner between patients just the other night and the digital tapes were rolling. The phone lines gave us a weak signal that night….but Dr. Ken sure didn’t! By the way, this is the uncut version of the interview and may be rated PG-13 for language and training content.
