  • Ohio State Buckeyes Flex Their Muscles

    IMG_2922b

    Outnumbered at The Shoe

Ohio State flexed their muscles a bit at Ohio Stadium as they played host to the Cincinnati Bearcats. and with that, the Buckeyes' Asst AD for Football Sports Performance, Coach Mickey Marotti, definitely had to be pleased with what's been #developedhere in Columbus. Interestingly, Mickey
Marotti was Cincinnati’s strength and conditioning coach for nearly nine years, from 1990-98. and Brady Collins, Cincinnati's Director of Football Performance,  worked for Coach Mick as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach with Ohio State Football. Head Football Coach Luke Fickell served as interim Head Football Coach for the Buckeyes.
With their 42-0 win, Ohio State maintained their spot among college football's elite in the 2019 season, moving their record to 2-0. The Bearcats make their trip back to Cincinnati and prep for another in-state rival, the Miami Redhawks, a team that they've been playing since 1888…. 1888!

Woody Hayes' Head Strength Coach Steve Bliss

About forty years ago, Ohio State's legendary Head Football Coach Woody Hayes had discovered some members of his Buckeye football squad experimenting with some weight training while down in Coral Gables, Florida. Several members of the Buckeyes were hanging around, after a practice, in a weight room with some Miami Hurricanes football players while on a Sugar Bowl game team trip. The players were actually delaying the bus trip back to the team hotel. Anyway, Coach Hayes did some investigating that day and ended up getting the name of the Hurricanes' strength coordinator, Steve Bliss.

Check out today's ASAP Podcast with Coach Steve Bliss and find out how the strength program at Ohio State was founded. Coach Bliss created a Master's Degree granting program with graduate assistant coaches to train the Buckeyes. Ted Lambrinides, Ken Mannie, Chip Morton, Rick Spielman, Julie Plank, Mike Medves, Don Moxley, Mark Asanovich and of course, Ohio State's Assistant Athletic Director for Football Sports Performance Mickey Marotti were just a few of the men and women who benefited from Steve Bliss's program!

Ohio State has canceled this  2014 Clinic.

The Ohio State Football Strength Staff has canceled the date and seminar agenda for their 2014 Strength and Conditioning Clinic to be held on February 1, 2014. The clinic, to be held at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, will be an excellent way for any coach, whether professional, collegiate or high school…. to increase their knowledge about the intricate training that's involved with preparing football players for competition. The clinic also promises to be a great learning experience for anyone involved with the training and conditioning of athletes.
Longtime strength professional, Mickey Marotti, is now the Asst. AD for Football Sports Performance for the Buckeyes and has coached a multitude of athletes to championship levels at all of the stops along his coaching path. And, of course, that includes preparing football squads that won two NCAA Football National Championships. Coach Marotti's staff will take the time to explain the program. Rick Court, Jeff Uhlenhake, Kenny Parker, and Anthony Schlegel are all true professionals and enjoy teaching, coaching and sharing ideas with the strength coaching community.  Former Buckeye, Bobby Carpenter will also be a speaker and share his experience of all his training.

  • Ohio State Football: Gatorade Fuel Bar Tour w/ Sports Dietitian Sarah Wick

Ohio State's QUICK CALSWhen Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus, Ohio….the newly signed Ohio State Buckeyes' Head Football Coach set out to arrange his first hire… a strength coach named Mickey Marotti. Yet, Meyer wanted more than a strength coach this go round. He had a vision for Marotti to become an all encompassing element to the Buckeye machine. Meyer and Marotti had previous ties at the University of Florida…. Notre Dame and other circumstances, too.

Now, Coach Mick would become Ohio State's Asst AD for Football Sports Performance and take on a huge role that groups under one umbrella: OSU Sports Medicine, OSU equipment, strength training, conditioning, speed training, psychology of training, and an aspect that had to a degree been somewhat overlooked…. sports nutrition. (And besides all that… on game day, he even conducts a new tradition that brings the Ohio State crowd, students, players and alumni together for a "warm-up activity" called "Quick Cals.")

Enter Ohio State Football Sports Dietitian Sarah Wick. She can be seen practically everywhere at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, a sprawling crown jewel that is the training center home to the Buckeye football squad….. that is, when they are not playing in front of 104,000 fans at Ohio Stadium which is just down the street on the banks of the Olentangy River. She's there, too, on game day…. walking the sidelines during both pre-game activities and the actual contest….making sure that the players are fueled properly for optimal performance. Sarah plans the meals, the snacks, the recovery nutrition, the smoothies…the proteins. In our video, Wick gives ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power a tour of the new Gatorade Fuel Bar. It's a state of the art nutritional center that will propel Ohio State's football program to higher levels. She also takes time and demonstrates how to make a hydration drink that can help Buckeye football stars or any athlete to replenish body weight, electrolytes and add some anti-inflammatory properties for any athlete in training. Somewhere, Coach Hayes is smiling!

  • ASAP Video: Jammer Rotations with Ohio State S&C Coach Kenny Parker

    Columbus, Ohio

    Part One: Hammer Jammer Rotations

    I
Buckeye cyclen this ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power video, it's evident why Ohio State's Asst AD for Football Sports Performance,Mickey Marotti, made sure to acquire the services of Coach Kenny Parker to the Buckeyes' Strength & Conditioning Staff when the current football coaching staff arrived in Columbus back in January of 2012. Parker, in his second year at Ohio State, is an excellent communicator, motivator and instructor. One of the many assets that he adds to the staff is the fact that he not only has plenty of coaching experience, but he's also played the game. Kenny Parker had the opportunity to play for both Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer at The University of Florida and was a starting defensive tackle for the Gators in '03 & '04. Add in the coaching stints that Parker served at Florida and Murray State University and there's no doubt that that the Buckeyes have a well seasoned, knowledgeable coach that compliments their excellent staff. And, coming soon, we'll have Part Two of this video where Coach Parker instructs the techniques of Lateral Med-ball Explosive Drills and some of the Sandbag/Weight Plate Drills that they use at Ohio State.

  • Ohio State Football Weightroom Video Tour 2013

IMG_4303ASAP Director of Video Production, Ed Cicale recently revisited Ohio State Buckeye Associate Director of Football Strength And Conditioning, Rick Court and Assistant A.D. for Football Sports Performance, Mickey Marotti. On this visit, the focus was on the upgrades and changes to the football training center located within The Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Slowly, they have been making big changes in the Buckeye weightroom…which , logistically, isn't the easiest thing to pull off while trying to train one of the top teams in all of college football. However, they've managed!

The training center rivals any weight training center in the world… and is certainly a plus for any recruit who takes major college football and physical training seriously. So take a look at the video and find out what's been going on in "C-bus"

  • Archie Griffin: The Three “D’s”

    The_woody_hayes_center_002_2

Recently, I had the good fortune of attending a motivation seminar in Columbus, Ohio.  Among marquee speakers that included the likes of Colin Powell, Steve Forbes, Zig Ziglar and Joe Montana, there was also the one and only winner of two Heisman Trophies, Archie Griffin…. a true ambassador to The Ohio State University. When the seminar had completed, I headed up Route 315 to the Lane Avenue exit and made my way to The Woody Hayes Athletic Center. It's a huge and sprawling complex where the Buckeyes spend a large amount of their time when they are not in class or over on the banks of the muddy Olentangy River playing football in the old "horseshoe" known as Ohio Stadium. I was once a graduate assistant coach here back in the 1980's…. but that was before the latest multimillion dollar upgrade to what was once called the "North" facility back then. I've included a few photos from the players' entranceway along with the pictures of Archie's trophies.

Speaking in his hometown sure didn't hurt his popularity any but what really captured the audience was his message about some things that he learned years ago from his coaches and mentors, Bob Stewart (Columbus Eastmoor Football Coach) and Woody Hayes (Ohio State Football)…. and that's The Three D's. In fact, Griffin explained that there's not a day that goes by without him thinking about the lessons imparted to him from these fine coaches.The_woody_hayes_002 Many of us can think back throughout the years of people who helped us attain success. People who left some mark on us or pointed us in the right direction. Archie Griffin's mentors left an impact on him through what he calls:

                                The Three D's

    1. Desire:

    2. Determination

    3. Dedication

With those three things placed into your daily plan…. you can stay on an even keel and more readily accomplish your goals in life. So to quote speaker Zig Ziglar, it may be time for "a check-up from the neck up". If so, take heed of the advice of the great Buckeye running back and re-evaluate your desire, determination and dedication. Get to the next level!
