  • 2012 Michigan State Spartan Strength Clinic: February 10th and 11th

Time is running out! There's only a few more days now until the Michigan State Strength Clinic. I have been attending clinics like this since 1982 and I have to proclaim these MSU strength seminars as the best as far as accommodations, learning environment, networking with fellow colleagues, and also the practical coaching ideas that can be taken back to our individual situations…wherever that might be. Most coaches aspire to greatness…. and touring the facilities and observing professionals at work is always a great motivator. You're not going to find a more knowledgeable staff who are willing to share their ideas and collaborate on this type of level. Truly one of the elite programs in all of collegiate sports! It doesn't happen by chance…. it's the people and the character that is there in East Lansing. Hope to see you there….

    Msu clinic

I have been to the first four MSU Spartan Strength & Conditioning Clinics and somehow they make it better and even more informative every year. This year's line up promises to be another special event for strength training professionals, students, trainers, physical therapists and personal trainers. Clinic Director Mike Vorkapich does an exceptional job organizing and getting the clinic off the ground. The speaking line-up is always top notch…this year will be no different with the likes of Head MSU Strength Coach Ken Mannie, Dan Riley, Ken Leistner, Jason Arapoff, Mike Joseph, Paul Harker, Gabe Harrington and Scott Hayes.

Additionally, just being inside the Spartan Strength Training Complex is enough to motivate. It's tied for first on my list of top college weight rooms that I have seen…coast to coast!

For all of the details and to access the REGISTRATION FORM just click on the Spartan Photo above. The clinic takes place at the Clara Bell Smith Academic Center right across from Spartan Stadium. It's a comfortable, climate controlled auditorium style learning environment with desk format to place electronic learning devices and laptops and notebooks. The practical "lab work" takes place in the Spartan Weight Room within Duffy Daugherty Building.

If you’re going to take your program to the next level, you’re going to need plenty of tools in your toolbox. There has to be motivation. There has to be proper diet. There has to be serious strength training. There has to be conditioning. There has to be Ram Sleds. Check out the five different “Kick Butt” sled products  in this video. Gameday will seem easy if tough practices and intense conditioning are the preparation mode. Here’s how.

  • Detroit Lions Strength Training

Lions weight room You may have missed the Detroit Lions Strength Clinic last February, let me say this, it was practically standing room only and very informative. Head Strength Coach Jason Arapoff hosted a great clinic with plenty of amenities… a nice rotation format to hear and see the featured speakers in a smaller group-size format and, a chance for the average guy to get an inside look at one of the nicer NFL training complexes that you’ll see anywhere.
Complimenting Coach Arapoff were the speakers…. Jim Kielbaso of Director of Total Performance Training Center, Ted Lambrinides Strength Coach University of Kentucky Wildcats, and Ted Rath; Detroit Lions Strength & Conditioning Assistant.

  • ASAP Podcast: Pre-Game Chat with Florida Strength Coach Mickey Marotti

    Lexington, Kentucky
IMG_0016 The Florida Gators were in town and it was strictly business for long time strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti and new Head Football Coach Will Muschamp. The Gators took command early with a huge and athletic group of lineman…both on defense and offense. The skill guys could probably all be placed on the track team….. in fact, one of their young running backs, Jeffrey Demps, has world class speed in the 100 meter dash….proving it at the Olympic Trials last year with a blazing 10.01 time! Does that track speed translate to football speed? Well, how about an 84 yard race to the Kentucky endzone????…which no doubt pleased offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, along with a team total of 405 yards rushing.

Prior to the kick-off, I caught up with UF strength coach Mickey Marotti who took a few minutes to share some information on the Florida In-Season Strength Training Program and what Saturday’s pre-game meal for the Gators consisted of. • Interval Training and the “Half Gasser” Test at Michigan State University

This ASAP Video on Interval Training was produced in East Lansing, Michigan with Michigan State University's Head Strength Coach Ken Mannie. He's into his 16th year at MSU and 27th working with NCAA Division 1 football players. Coach Mannie has worked with many championship level coaches over the years, including Nick Saban and present Spartan Head Football Coach Mark Dantonio.  Mannie is on the ASAP Advisory Board.

Coach describes what Interval training is….how it works…. and why it is so effective. You'll also see a few Spartans running some "Half Gassers", which is running the width of the football field, touching the line with your foot, and then returning back to the original starting line….. for a total of 106 yards. Coach also explains what the desired times that need to be attained are… according to what position the athlete plays on the squad.
