  • Ohio State Football: Gatorade Fuel Bar Tour w/ Sports Dietitian Sarah Wick

Ohio State's QUICK CALSWhen Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus, Ohio….the newly signed Ohio State Buckeyes' Head Football Coach set out to arrange his first hire… a strength coach named Mickey Marotti. Yet, Meyer wanted more than a strength coach this go round. He had a vision for Marotti to become an all encompassing element to the Buckeye machine. Meyer and Marotti had previous ties at the University of Florida…. Notre Dame and other circumstances, too.

Now, Coach Mick would become Ohio State's Asst AD for Football Sports Performance and take on a huge role that groups under one umbrella: OSU Sports Medicine, OSU equipment, strength training, conditioning, speed training, psychology of training, and an aspect that had to a degree been somewhat overlooked…. sports nutrition. (And besides all that… on game day, he even conducts a new tradition that brings the Ohio State crowd, students, players and alumni together for a "warm-up activity" called "Quick Cals.")

Enter Ohio State Football Sports Dietitian Sarah Wick. She can be seen practically everywhere at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, a sprawling crown jewel that is the training center home to the Buckeye football squad….. that is, when they are not playing in front of 104,000 fans at Ohio Stadium which is just down the street on the banks of the Olentangy River. She's there, too, on game day…. walking the sidelines during both pre-game activities and the actual contest….making sure that the players are fueled properly for optimal performance. Sarah plans the meals, the snacks, the recovery nutrition, the smoothies…the proteins. In our video, Wick gives ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power a tour of the new Gatorade Fuel Bar. It's a state of the art nutritional center that will propel Ohio State's football program to higher levels. She also takes time and demonstrates how to make a hydration drink that can help Buckeye football stars or any athlete to replenish body weight, electrolytes and add some anti-inflammatory properties for any athlete in training. Somewhere, Coach Hayes is smiling!

  • ASAP Video at Mississippi State University… HAIL STATE

Asap at miss stateTraveling along Mississippi Route 82 Westbound on a recent ASAP Road Trip through the deep south…. down in the heart of the Southeastern Conference ~ the SEC, we ventured over toward Mississippi State University in Starkville MS. It's the home of the Bulldogs and it's what's referred to down there as 'Hail State."  We took the last spur south on Rt 12  and arrived just in time for the afternoon session of that day's second  training camp practice . Head Football Coach Dan Mullen directed the upbeat session during the typical hot August day there. Ice cold Gatorade was everywhere.
Once practice was over, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Matt Balis welcomed ASAP~ Athletic Strength And Power to his gleaming weight room at the Leo Seal Football Complex….and this is one of the more impressive facilities that you'll see anywhere! Click on the photo above for the Mississippi State University strength complex pictures.

Coach Balis knows a little bit about developing football players! He's done it at the championship level with some great teams at the University of Utah and the University of Florida. He then headed over to the University of Virginia and now anchors the program at MSU. Balis gave us ALL-ACCESS for these photos and this video tour.

  • ASAP Video: Jammer Rotations with Ohio State S&C Coach Kenny Parker

    Columbus, Ohio

    Part One: Hammer Jammer Rotations

    I
Buckeye cyclen this ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power video, it's evident why Ohio State's Asst AD for Football Sports Performance,Mickey Marotti, made sure to acquire the services of Coach Kenny Parker to the Buckeyes' Strength & Conditioning Staff when the current football coaching staff arrived in Columbus back in January of 2012. Parker, in his second year at Ohio State, is an excellent communicator, motivator and instructor. One of the many assets that he adds to the staff is the fact that he not only has plenty of coaching experience, but he's also played the game. Kenny Parker had the opportunity to play for both Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer at The University of Florida and was a starting defensive tackle for the Gators in '03 & '04. Add in the coaching stints that Parker served at Florida and Murray State University and there's no doubt that that the Buckeyes have a well seasoned, knowledgeable coach that compliments their excellent staff. And, coming soon, we'll have Part Two of this video where Coach Parker instructs the techniques of Lateral Med-ball Explosive Drills and some of the Sandbag/Weight Plate Drills that they use at Ohio State.

  • University of South Carolina: Scott Greenawalt

Pic 59_edited-1Following a 5:30 wake-up call, I headed out of the comfy confines of The Inn at USC, which is right on the campus of The University of South Carolina (Columbia,SC). In order to get a lay of the land, I got hustling on a four mile campus walk. The buildings and history at this great institution are steeped in tradition…and the school has been educating students there for over 200 years. It's worth a visit just to walk the campus area of class buildings and residence halls. It's really like a deep south botanical nature preserve.

However, that's not where Gamecocks Basketball Strength Coach Scott Greenawalt spends his time! He's over at The Colonial Life Arena…and that's where the basketball strength & conditioning program takes place. Towering mossy oak trees or palmetto plants are not the main attraction…. it's multi-purpose racks, barbells and specialized strength training equipment that takes precedence there. And, of course the home basketball court of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

In today's educational video Coach Greenawalt explains the basics of the Dumbell Step-Up Exercise.

    IMG_5703

After a hearty breakfast at the Philly Diner, we made our way over to I-95 then I-676 into downtown Philadelphia to the intersection of Diamond St. and N. 10th…. and that's where the football strength training center is located on the campus of Temple University. A school where football has been woven into the fabric since 1894.
And, within that building, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Jeremy Scott (photo right) and Assistant Strength Coach Shelton Gaffney (photo left) are making sure the Temple Owls are grinding away as they prep for another big year. The schedule is formidable…packed with familiar football powers that dot the national landscape. There's no time to take days off!  It's all about getting into this newly completed weight room and making gains. Click here or on the Temple "T" photo above for an inside glimpse at the training center.

  • Wisconsin Football Strength… Evan Simon and Jamil Walker

IMG_5426On a recent trip to Madison, Head Football Strength Coach Evan Simon rolled out the red carpet for ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power. I was able to get the behind the scenes look at the Badger Football Strength Program…. and a taste of what their Badger Performance Nutrition Center is like, too! They're not short on dairy products up there…and that leads to some great tasting smoothies….just what the squad needs after grinding away in the newly renovated football strength complex built within Camp Randall Stadium.

Once the players were gone, we enlisted Assistant Strength Coach Jamil Walker… a former standout Badger himself…. to demonstrate a few of the proper techniques on several exercises. In this video, Jamil performs the Land Mine exercise that's a good one for core strength development. Meanwhile, Evan Simon explains how to complete the exercise properly. There's also a few looks at some of the Camp Randall surroundings… pretty good motivators!

  • Roger Schwab Podcast: Main Line Health & Fitness, Philadelphia, PA

IMG_5520While making my way around the huge, sprawling metropolis of Philadelphia, I was finally able to drive into one of the finer suburbs that you'll see anywhere in the USA… known as Bryn Mawr. It's a centerpiece of what's known as the Main Line. It's all good!

In fact, it's in this area of Philly where you'll find some of the most interesting, and expensive, revolutionary strength training machines called X-Force. Roger Schwab, the founder of Main Line Health & Fitness has been in business there since he opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1976. Today, his training center maintains 35,000 square feet and is home of 120 pieces of vintage Nautilus, Med-X and Hammer Strength strength machines. There's also a full compliment of all of the popular cadio training equipment. In addition, they have a nutrition and smoothie bar!

But, it was in January 2012 when Schwab decided to add the X-Force "Negative Training" Equipment to his training center.
LogoEquipment that puts the emphasis on the eccentric phase of the repetition. Exercise physiologists have determined that a person can handle 40% more weight on the negative phase of the "rep"….thus, trainees who focus their workouts on this aspect are set to reap some great gains! And it was with the addition of this advanced training system that has incredibly increased…. that is tripled, the personal training segment of his facility in Bryn Mawr.

In this ASAP Podcast, Roger Shwab discusses his Mainline Health & Fitness Training Center. Click here or on the official ASAP Podcast logo.
