  • Michigan State Spartan Strength Clinic 2013

    IMG_0408rev
It's time to register for the upcoming Michigan State Strength Clinic which will take place on February 8th and 9th, 2013 at the Strength Training and MSU Football facilities in East Lansing, Michigan. This is the 6th Annual clinic that they have held. There's a reason that Coaches Ken Mannie and Mike Vorkapich keep having this clinic: It's popular and a SUCCESS. The Michigan State Strength program is well known from coast to coast and Mannie, Vorkapich, Tommy Hoke and the rest of the staff perpare the Spartans for championships. Players develop rapidly there. In fact, almost too fast as quite a few Michigan State players have opted out of their collegiate eligibility as Spartans to pursue professional careers…. physically and skillwise…ready to make the transition.

IMG_0286Now's your chance to check out the program from the front row seats! Soak in one of the truly top training centers in all of college football and basketball. Take note of the specialized equipment that they use, learn strength training from many of the master coaches and lecturers in the business, and, of course, catch Coach Mannie in action.

Just click here, or on SPARTY for the brochure, which offers a discount for early registration.

  • Detroit Lions 2013 Strength & Conditioning Clinic

Detroit_lionsI just got word from Detroit Lions’ Asst Strength Coach Ted Rath about their upcoming strength and conditioning clinic.  It’s the Third Annual Detroit Lions Strength & Conditioning Clinic and it will take place at their Allen Park training facilty in Michigan on Saturday March 2nd, 2013.
Click on the Detroit Lions’ Logo for the official flyer and information on this clinic.

I have been to the previous two clinics and they were conducted very professionally. The clinic format that they use is very smooth and it’s also a great chance to see one of the top notch NFL training facilities.  Head Strength Coach Jason Arapoff,
Arapoff-jason-hs10who is in his twelfth season with the Detroit Lions, makes sure that everything is organized and that the clinic runs efficiently. And, with Coach Ted Rath
Rath-ted-hs10 on hand, the clinic is sure to be energetic and enthusiastic.

So, if you’re a coach…and really of any sport, this is an event that you may want to add to your professional development calendar right away! See you there…..

Gameday is huge in college football. It usually only occurs twelve or thirteen times a year. So it's critical that the players be prepared for action. Muscles need to be warmed up, the joints and tendons have to be adequately prepped for the cutting, the hits, and the wear and tear of the game.

ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power got access to the #6 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes as Coaches Rick Court and Anthony Schlegel got the team ready. Check out the video below.

  • Ohio State Football: “Quick Cals” led by Mickey Marotti

College football games have a special quality that can't be matched by the pro game. Many programs, such as the one at the Ohio State University, have over 100 years of traditions. A marching band that "dots the 'i'", singing the alma mater at the game's end, tailgating and reminiscing about the college years…it's all good!
This year at Ohio State is somewhat different. There's a new head coach, Urban Meyer, and he's tweaked a few things here and there to put his fingerprints on the program. For one, he immediately brought in his "most important hire to the staff", Mickey Marotti. Coach Marotti became the Assistant Athletic Director for Football Sports Performance at Ohio State in January, 2012 and hit the ground running…..and so did the Buckeyes! Early morning training sessions, toughness drills, sports nutrition guidance and physically demanding strength training became the norm around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Marotti understands traditions. He's built his coaching resume at West Virginia, Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Florida…where he was instrumental in helping Urban Meyer construct two National Championships football squads. On gameday, he's responsible for much of the pre-game prep involved in getting the team ready for the contest. He also leads this new "tradition" at twenty-three minutes til kick-off that involves the players, the students and the fans called "QUICK CALS." Go Bucks!

  • Michigan State Football “Hills on Mills”

Okay…. here's the disclaimer! I wouldn't suggest adjusting your treadmill to the settings that Coach Mannie and the Michigan State Football Strength Staff have….unless you've been training like a Spartan. It's not fun and games in the Duffy Daughtery Football Building in East Lansing, Michigan. The Staff: Tommy Hoke, Lorenzo Guess, Bill Burghardt….. they're all pushing, driving and motivating the players to reach their full potential. Check out the video and you'll see a few of the athletes performing the "Hills on Mills" routine.
For starters, you'll need a Woodway type treadmill, disengage the gearing mechanism so that the running deck flys freely and then adjust the incline to 25%. After grabbing hold of the handles, begin walking for about ten seconds….then proceed to a jog….and finally the "all out" phase… GO FULL SPEED for at least five seconds and try to crank out 15…16… maybe even getting to 17 MPH. Decelerate and continue on for several reps depending on you or your athletes' conditioning level.
