  • Miami University Redhawks Weight Room Tour: Paul Harker

Miami, OH logoYou won't find nicer college campus anywhere! Miami University, Oxford, Ohio 45056. It's Redhawk Country and home to "the Cradle of Coaches." Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Ara Parseghian, Paul Brown, Weeb Eubank, Jim Tressel…the list goes on. They all coached football at Miami. Don Treadwell is the coach today, a former Miami wide receiver himself. He's got a heck of a coaching pedigree and was propelled to fame when he took over head coaching duties at Michigan State following a Mark Dantonio heart attack. Treadwell returned to his alma mater a year ago with hopes of winning the Mid American Conference championship soon.
Nestled between Millett Hall and Yager Stadium is the weight training complex, the Walter Gross & Family Athlete Development Center, and it is headed by Paul Harker, the Director of Strength & Conditioning. And that's who took a timeout between Redhawk training sessions to give me and former Redskin, Ken Hauck (Miami '76), an exceptional tour.

This  facility was recently retooled with a complete line-up of Rogers Athletic Pendulum Strength Training Equipment. I definitely give this stuff a thumbs up. If this was Facebook, I would click the LIKE button for sure!

Coach Kim Wood understands the role of the strength coach. His strength clinics will address this issue…and address the X's and O's of getting the most out of physical training. • Ohio State Buckeyes: Woody Hayes Athletic Center April 2012

KickStrength coaches, fitness enthusiasts, and weightroom aficianados will be able to appreciate the accompanying video with this blogpost. I recently visited the Ohio State University and Les Wexnar Football Complex located at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. That's where the Buckeye Football program is going through its big transition phase. Head Coach Urban Meyer didn't hesitate to make Mickey Marotti his first hire to his coaching staff. Marotti was a GA at Ohio State once, an assistant strength coach at West Virginia, strength coached the Bearcats at Cincinnati…..Notre Dame's Fighting Irish and of course, the Florida Gators . Now, like Urban Meyer, he has gone full circle, returning to his alma mater. Marotti takes on added roles in Columbus now, becoming an Assistant Athletic Director for Football Sports Performance.

Once Mickey arrived in C-bus, he assembled a staff made up of Associate Director Rick Court, and  strength staff Kenny Parker, Jeff Uhlenhake and Anthony Schlegel. From there, the change was on! They made some adjustments by adding the necessary tools to the toolbox, some Rogers Athletic Pendulum Equipment….Hammer Strength, Shuttle MVPs, and some Pit Belt Squat devices. More changes are in store, but for now, the football squad is priority one. The first drastic change that I noticed from years past is that the offensive linemen had made huge advances in physical appearance. Gone were the wide girths…. these guys look fit and are becoming a strong bunch. The winter conditioning program has already paid dividends and the rest of the team is quite excited about the new strength and conditioning  program and the results that thay have seen. The two scrimmage sessions that I watched were enough to surmise that superior conditioning is a must at OSU. Coach Meyer's offense and practices are fast and furious and demand being in great shape.

So, join Coach Rick Court and I as we take a quick tour around their facility where one of the more storied programs in all of college football completes their training.
