  • Mississippi State Bulldogs’ Strength Training with Coach Rick Court

    IMG_26488
Our 2015 ASAP Strength Tour led us once again to America's Deep South. It's a far cry from Vermont or even somewhere like Cincinnati. And, it's downright hot and humid down there! But that doesn't seem to phase the Mississippi State Bulldogs at all. In fact, they seem to thrive in it. One thing is for certain, their opponents better be training for those types of conditions if they're planning a trip to Starkville. Anyway, we caught up with Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Rick Court, the guy who masterminds the training regimen for the 'Dawgs. Coach donned a long sleeved white Adidas climate control shirt underneath his official Mississippi State Bulldogs Football shirt. He comes out of the gates at full speed and doesn't stop to catch his breath until a group workout ends. Then, he recharges and is ready to go for the next group. He flat out loves the strength coaching profession. We have known about him since his G.A. days at Bowling Green, then Toledo and San Diego State. Ohio State….. and now he's settled in at Mississippi State. Coach Court has a full grasp of how to prepare college football players and is always willing to share his knowledge of training with other coaches and those involved with college athletics. In our ASAP Podcast, Coach Court tells us what the Bulldogs have been up to, information about today's workout session and how they are prepping for the 2015 campaign.

  • ASAP Visit: Ohio State Buckeyes PHOTO Shoot

    IMG_2527tw IMG_2454a

Our trip up I-71N to Columbus went well until we came to a thirty minute virtual standstill. We never did see any reason for it…but that's the way it sometimes goes on the ASAP Summer road tour.
Anyway, we arrived early for the 5:45a.m. workout with the first group. There wasn't any student traffic on Olentangy Road at that hour, with the exception of some earlybird Ohio State Football squad members negotiating the rain and night darkness as they turned into the venerable Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Coach Mick Marotti and his staff were well prepared as the Buckeye players started filing in. Coach Kenny Parker, Phil Matusz , Jeff Uhlenhake and newcomer Brady Collins were all set to go.  As for the players, there's IMG_2462no doubt that this group of Buckeyes will have high expectations and will be making another run at a national championship. So they were ready for more of "The GRIND".

  • Mississippi State Bulldogs’ Strength Training Update with Coach Rick Court

IMG_0614Last week's trip to Atlanta, Georgia went very well! Traffic through the mountains was not a problem and stopping in Knoxville gave a chance to have some more Dead End Barbeque. The stuff is always serious good at the University of Tennessee Strength Clinic…. and it was equally good this time, too. While I'm on the restaurant subject, the next morning was a great opportunity for a late breakfast in Marietta, Georgia at The Cafe 33. This place is a must for a great cup of coffee and the build your own omelette! From there it was on to ATL. We did about a four mile walk through downtown and then settled in for some fine southern cooking at Mary Macs Tea Room.
After that, it was time to head to the Georgia Tech Strength Clinic. That's where we met up Rick Court, one of the event's main speakers, and recorded this podcast.
Be sure to be in Cincinnati Ohio at Kim Wood's FOOTBALL STRENGTH Clinic #5 in June! Coach Court will be a featured speaker for that clinic!

Coach Butch Jones is getting a serious foothold down in Knoxville. The guy seems to have a motor that can hang at interstate speeds while the rest of us just make our way through the residential districts. As per usual, and despite a probable overfilled Google Calendar,  Jones stopped in to the University of Tennessee Strength & Conditioning Clinic to share some coaching ideas and help motivate and encourage a great turnout at the clinic.
Meanwhile, Head Strength Coach Dave Lawson kept the clinic on pace while Asst Michael Szerszen kept a close watch on his wife who was about to give birth at any second! The speakers, who included ASAP Sports Science Director Ted Lambrinides, did a very nice job. And, this year, U.T. added former U.S. Marine Eric Kapitulik of THE PROGRAM who gave a very interesting talk on leadership development. Clemson's Strength Coach Joey Batson and Georgia Southern's Kyle Speer did super jobs of explaining how they train their athletes for their respective universities.
Also, while I was there, I caught the Vols in training….here's some of the photos!
