  • Ohio State Buckeyes National Champs’ Speed, Strength & Conditioning Clinic

IMG_9656abcThe Buckeyes are fresh off of their 2014 National Championship victory over the Oregon Ducks and still living the dream. However, Coach Mickey Marotti, the squad's Assistant A.D. for Football Sports Performance, seems to have filed that great season to the past and is directing the Buckeyes' "GRIND" toward preparation for the coming season. They've added a few mid-year arrivals to a big returning group of Buckeyes and it will come as no surprise that Ohio State will be the 2015 Pre-Season #1 team in college football. Urban Meyer's Ohio State team has tweaked a few things this year already, including how they go about the daily grind. In fact, the newly revised training and practice schedule has already made a huge difference.

That being said, it's business as usual as Assistant Strength Coach Jeff Uhlenhake prepares for the Ohio State Football Speed Strength & Conditioning Clinic to be held on Saturday, March 7th, 2015 at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on the campus of the Ohio State University. The speakers for the Buckeye Strength Clinic are the OSU Strength Staff along with former Ohio State Assistant Strength Coach, now ASAP Sports Science Director Ted Lambrinides and former grad assistant and current Cincinnati Bengals' Strength Coach Chip Morton. So, all staff speakers are directly connected to the Buckeyes!
The clinic is designed to help you in many areas of athlete development. Those areas include, but are not limited to, Functional Movement, Prehabilitation, Elements of Rest and Recovery, Upper and Lower Body Training the OSU Way, and motivational factors applying to both the individual and team.
Registration is from 8am-9am with bagels and coffee included. Lectures begin at 9am and go thru 3pm with a short lunch break at noon (lunch provided). If you have questions or concerns you can email Clinic Director Coach Jeff Uhlenhake or call 614-292-9053

  • Mississippi State Bulldogs Strength & Conditioning Clinic

AASAP witnessed him at Bowling Green, Toledo, Ohio State and then down in Starkville, Mississippi too. And now is your chance to meet and learn strength training from one of the top strength coaches in the business….. Rick Court. He's the fiery and enthusiastic strength coach at Mississippi State. He gets the Bulldawgs some bite and brings the JUICE!
Rick Court is hosting the 2015 Mississippi State Strength Clinic held on February 28th, 2015. Assistants Brady Collins and Nick Savage will have their "A" game at the clinic, too. So this will be a great learning environment and chance to see their Leo Seal Football Complex.

Furthermore, a trip to Starkville brings a chance to swing over to The Little Dooey for some barbecue. It's ASAP approved, as well as meeting the approval of Kirk Herbstreit and Brady Collins.

  • Rob Stock: Founder of the Human Performance Initiative HPI

Human-performance-initiative-logo-2014Normally, I'm blogging about squat techniques, awesome collegiate or pro training facilities, sports nutrition or uploading some cool photos or podcasts from my travels. However, today I have to tell you about a guy I met last weekend at the Michigan State Strength Clinic. His name is Rob Stock….and what a story!
Presently, Rob oversees his 5600 sq. foot training facility, known as: HPI Human Performance Initiative, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. If you are locates in that general area, it may be very worth checking out! They have a well equipped gym that includes the latest Power-Lift racks, along with plenty of motivated and skilled trainers who can help their clients meet specific goals…whether they be structured strength training programs, speed and agility enhancement, weight loss programs or even basic general fitness.

Rob-Stock-Owner-HPI-Gym-Virginia-BeachMore importantly though, is to be in the midst of the driving force behind HPI…and that would be Rob Stock. You see, Rob Stock is far from the typical gym owner. And, it was as I sat in the auditorium of the Clara Bell Smith Center at MSU that I heard an incredible story of survival, determination and grit. During a military tour in Afghanistan in 2010, Stock,a U.S. Navy SEAL sniper, was inches from a detonating 40mm enemy grenade that basically split his arm open from his wrist to his armpit and riddled his face with fragmentation that crushed his orbital bone, leaving him with a mouthful of crushed teeth. Marvelously, he was able to be choppered out of the area where a team of surgeons were able to begin piecing the damage back together. Photographs of his battle damaged arm are so graphic that it was difficult to look. And then the comeback ensued.

The attendees at Ken Mannie and Mike Vorkapich's MSU Strength Clinic heard a motivating and compelling story about a real life hero and survivor. So much of what we here from these wars are a few blips on the screen accompanied by a few wounded in action and fatality stats. Rob Stock brings it to life. Amazing comeback!

The video is a brief intro by MSU Clinic emcee Ted Lambrinides and an outtake from Stock's presentation.

  • Professional Development for 2015

IMG_8941aI went to my first strength training and conditioning clinic back in 1983. At the time, I was a graduate assistant strength coach at The Ohio State University. The Head Strength Coach, Steve Bliss, was adamant about his staff seeking out ways to improve their coaching by gaining more knowledge and insight on both the science…. and art…. of strength training and conditioning of athletes.
One of the first clinics that I attended was a clinic in Cincinnati where Cincinnati Bengals' Strength Coach Kim Wood was a speaker. The University of Michigan was represented by their strength coach Mike Gittleson. And, a guy who created and wrote The Steel Tip was there, too; Ken Leistner.  These guys were amazing. And, they had some of their athletes on hand to perform some demonstration workouts. These were not the workouts of the local Planet Fitness variety. These guys were going at it with a fervor that most of the coaches in attendance had never seen before.

Coach Wood had some of his Bengal players go through a series of exercises and the coaches in attendance took heed! Since the Bengals had recently been a Super Bowl contestant,  just about every coach had their notebooks and legal pads going full tilt. Nobody scrolled their text messages or email accounts back then!

Anyway, a few days later, a bunch of grad assistants at Ohio State were busy using their new found knowledge. Young Buckeye football players like Jim Lachey, Keith Byars, Chris Spielman and Jeff Uhlenhake were subjected to a new and intense approach to their workouts. Coach Bliss and his assistant, Ted Lambrinides beamed with approval.

    IMG_9406

ASAP took you behind the scenes to see the Ohio State Buckeyes in training Part One with Asst AD for Football Sports Performance Mickey Marotti. We took you there for the Woody Hayes Athletic Center strength tour. We have shown you Front Squat Techniques with Asst Strength Coach Anthony Schlegel….. along with some core work and rope training with him as well.  Of course, we gave you top notch Hammer Jammer Techniques with  Strength Coach Kenny Parker and then-intern Nick Savage. And former All American OSU Buckeye Jeff Uhlenhake, now an Asst Strength Coach, joined us for an important Strength Coaching Segment.
We even brought you to field level for one of the great college marching bands, The Ohio State Marching Band and their incomparable "Script Ohio."  Lastly, you were able to see the Gatorade Fuel Bar Tour with Buckeyes' Team Dietitian Sarah Wick.

Once the training and nutrition is instilled, it's time for some football. Everything that the players have trained for and accomplished through hours of practice finally comes to fruition.

  • Auburn University Football Strength: Coach Ryan Russell

    Auburn, Alabama

20140716_085503Welcome to Bigtime! Auburn University….  just across the road from Toomer's Drug Store…..where life stands still…..as if it's still 1967 in there.  Counter fountain milkshakes and root beer floats along with grilled sandwiches.  And, the newly renovated Toomer's Corner, which is bouncing back from some criminal malice that it had a few years ago. Grab some lunch at Zoe's Kitchen right there on Magnolia Avenue and take a walk through the beautiful campus. I did see a couple of huge members of the Auburn Tigers Football team leaving a local establishment called The Hound. These guys raved about the bison burgers there.

If you care to see one of the truly incredible college fitness centers, the Auburn University Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, then take the tour. It's an amazing structure and I would hope that there's a lot of fit college kids hanging out on this campus because this place tops them all! Unreal.

20140716_085257One group of college kids on the campus who are definitely in superb condition is the Auburn Tiger Football team. And of course,  the physical training that they encounter is quite different that what's going on over at the fitness center.  Led by Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Ryan Russell, the Tigers are able to perform at optimal levels. The comprehensive program that's implemented there ensures that the athletes succeed and meet high expectations. This is a football program steeped in tradition and home to many great players. James Brooks, Takeo Spikes, Tucker Fredrickson, Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan, Cam Newton to name a few.  Oh and then there's this Chris Davis 108 yard field goal attempt return.  WOW. So, the players know the deal. Train extremely hard…. contend for an SEC Championship…..or for that matter, a National Championship. Here's a podcast/video that I conducted  with Coach Ryan Russell prior to the 2014 season. War Eagle!
