  • Ohio State Buckeyes in Training Part One: Coach Mickey Marotti

At the time, he may of dreamed of what it would be like to be the strength coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes when he stepped foot into the Ernie Biggs Athletic Training Facility, known as the "north" facility, to become a G.A. strength and conditioning coach. That was right around 1987.
But, a little over twenty five years later, football coach Urban Meyer was to be named as Ohio State's 24th head coach. And once again, Meyer would call upon his long time right hand man…. Mickey Marotti… to take on a lead role of the responsibility of reviving a college football powerhouse program that had seemed to have fallen into a stage of hibernation.

    Coach Marotti

Coach Mickey Marotti spots Braxton Miller on bench presses

Coach Urban Meyer and Mickey Marotti have been teamed together basically since the time Meyer, who as a college football assistant coach, was on a site visit at the University of Cincinnati and witnessed Marotti who was the U.C. Bearcat Strength Coach in action. Coach Marotti was training the 'Cats at that particular moment and it definitely caught Meyer's attention. The training style was seemingly relentless. It was intense. Marotti was building a foundation– that of a highly motivated and enthused strength coach who infused his fervor on the athletes with whom he worked. He recognized a connection between intense physical training and development of the mindset of highly competive athletes. Even the Cincinnati Bearcat basketball team reaped the rewards of having Marotti there. Basketball Coach Bob Huggins loved it , too. Meyer made note of that coach he'd seen at Cincinnati. Meyer, at the time was an assistant coach at Notre Dame, and sought out to somehow get him in up to South Bend. That happened.

WhacAnd, finally a few years later, Urban Meyer was able to reconnect with Mickey Marotti and bring him to Gainesville, Florida to take on the task with the University of Florida Gators. The combination worked. The trophy case now sports a pair of glass football trophies: college football's top prize. Several years later, Marotti departed the University of Florida, where he had helped mold top players into a national championship quality program, and headed back to Columbus, Ohio. This time though, the stockily built coach who once played college football at West Liberty University in West Virginia, would take on a larger, all encompassing role. Strength coach, yes… for sure…but now he'd take on even greater span as indicated with a new title of Assistant AD for Football Sports Performance. Departments like athletic training, custom tailored football sports nutrition, sport psychology, sports medicine, team physicians, GPS sports science, game day and practice prep would all be under his umbrella now. But most of all, motivation. That's Coach Mick's specialty…. motivation. When you've been doing the job as long as he has, you know and understand many types of personalities. Marotti developed a knack for knowing how to get elite football athletes from all walks of life to desire excellence and a hard training mentality. Ultimately, it takes a ton of hard work and effort. Marotti can help to extract it.

So, when Coach Marotti made the return trip to "C-bus," this time it was to The Woody Hayes Athletic Center, where a long corridor separates the original football training facility of the 70's and 80's from what is now one of the premier facilities of it's kind in all of collegiate and professional athletics. Ohio State….where Meyer and Marotti were once Graduate Assistant coaches, the two have now assumed their ultimate dream jobs with aspirations of taking the Buckeyes to college football's final four…and perhaps beyond.

Check out some of the photos here from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, along with Part One of The Buckeyes in Training. These are some behind-the-scenes looks into how Coach Marotti prepares the Buckeyes.

  • ASAP Podcast with Exercise Physiologist Dr. Ellington Darden PhD: The Body Fat Breakthough

Reknowned gym owner/fitness expert Roger Schwab of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania understands well of the principles of a type of exercise known as eccentric or negative training…so well that he invested thousands of dollars into a specialized type of training equipment called X-FORCE.  The same can be said of Joe Cirulli and his Gainesville (Florida) Health & Fitness Training Center. He has also acquired the  X-Force line of training equipment. The results at their training centers have been quite remarkable. I can testify to the training experience that I had in Bryn Mawr at Roger's Mainline Health & Fitness. My first twenty minute session, supervised by Roger Schwab left me with a feeling that I'd never quite felt from years of strength training and conditioning. In fact, recovery took several days. I couldn't wait to return for more…. and I did. However, flights to Philadelphia can add up. Then, I got word of exercise physiologist Ellington Darden's new book………

    The Body Fat Breakthrough

    Dr. Darden's new book

Recorded at Kim Wood's Football Strength Clinic #4, ASAP overcame recording and technical difficulties and saved the audio for today's ASAP Podcast. Fortunately , our special guest Dr. Ellington Darden, was able to share some of his findings he's authored in his new book entitled: The Body Fat Breakthrough."
In the book, Darden details with plenty of motivating photographs, some of his findings on a new and interesting training regimen that produces some very noticeable results! Dr. Darden, an exercise phyiologist and author of 50 books dating back to 1973, knows how to deliver the point in easy to understand terminology. But, the huge message that I got from this new text is the reinforcement of the importance of Eccentric…or Negative Acentuated Training along with some new training techniques and methodology to my personal program and to those athletes and students whom I train.

In his book, Dr. Darden explains how placing a greater emphasis on eccentric training can transform strength training and fitness training to new levels. And, his 30-30-30 Routine, which I've been experimenting with, is guaranteed  to provide your program with a spark for improved results. Here's the ASAP Podcast with El Darden and information on how to get a copy of his newest book…. a must for any fitness trainer, strength coach, personal trainer or athlete looking to bump up their program.

  • ASAP at Mississippi State Football Strength Training with Coach Rick Court

IMG_6159We had to make a return visit to Starkville, Mississippi this summer to check in on how the Mississippi State Football team was progressing under their new Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Rick Court. Of course, we visited Hail State last summer on our ASAP FOOTBALL POWER Road Show, but needed to see the changes!
We've seen Coach Court at Bowling Green, Toledo and Ohio State and it also gave us a chance to see Thomas Stallworth, Brady Collins and Nick Savage in action during the first morning group. Coach Court has the players and his assistants amped up…. it's high energy and strictly business!

Ted Lambrinides speaking to the Bulldogs

Upon our arrival, we saw a very spirited conditioning workout, as the 'Dawgs worked their way through without a bark. Later, after we all headed to the team meeting room where ASAP's Ted Lambrinides spoke the team on the topic of "Drugs, Supplements & Personal Conduct." Definitely a winning message for athletes and young people!
Once Head Football Coach Dan Mullen finished wrapped up the meeting, we were headed off to a barbecue joint called The Little Dooey where we had some pulled pork (protein!) and some crawfish poppers….. not bad! Then it was time for the Hilton Garden Inn at Starkville to get rested up for a morning workout with the strength staff.
So, after cranking out an early bird workout, somehow I was able to film some footage of the first group of Mississippi State Bulldogs. Interestingly, these guys had first group priority because they were volunteers to visit a hospital later on that day. Great bunch of players!
Here's a look at what's going on behind the scenes in Starkville.

  • ASAP on the Road: Michigan State Spartan Coach Mark Dantonio

    SPARTANS

Coach Mannie explains the Conditioning Test Protocol

We made a trip up to East Lansing, Michigan to check in on the defending Big Ten Champs…the Michigan State Spartans. Strength Coach Ken Mannie and also Head Football Coach Mark Dantonio.
The Spartans were prepping for the opening of 2014 fall camp. ASAP's Ed Cicale shot some video, gathered some interviews and photos while Ted Lambrinides gave a 10:00a.m. talk to the MSU Spartans in the team meeting room, titled  "Drugs, Supplements & Personal Conduct."
Fall Camp 2014 is opening for the team that is coming off a huge 13-1 season, a Big Ten Championship, a Rose Bowl victory and is presently riding a 10 game win streak. Coach Dantonio has done a phenomenal job in his seven seasons at MSU, where the Spartans have also won three straight bowl appearances.
So, with all the big things going on by the Green and White, ASAP took a time out and headed up to find out how it's being done. Coach Dantonio shared a few thoughts on his basic tenets of operating a winning football program, talked about the challenges of trying to defend a championship, and also revealed his thoughts on what veteran Head Strength Coach Ken Mannie means to his Michigan State Spartan Football program.
Here's the video interview with Coach Dantonio:

  • University of Kentucky Basketball Strength Training…Underwater!

IMG_7853ASAP continued its Summer 2014 Road Show and we set our sites on Lexington, Kentucky…..home to the winningest basketball program anywhere: The Kentucky Wildcats. And with this premier program comes huge expectations. They have an incredible fan base that expects one basic thing: victories…. and championships…as in National Championships.

So, as I left my very comfy confines and suite at The Campbell House Lexington, I made the quick drive to the University of Kentucky Basketball's Joe Craft Center. basically the headquarters of this basketball juggernaut. You know it when you walk through the doors. The basketball office is on the left and then it requires coded entry for access to the rest of the facility. Once downstairs, I'm just a few yards from Head Strength Coach Ray "ROCK" Oliver's office within the basketball strength training center. Key code access required here, too. Finally inside, there's some of the top players of the college game going through some intense training using some med balls. Assistant Strength Coach Robert Harris also led a specialized core workout routine as Rock kept watch with a look of "unsatisfied" on his face.

    Rock OLiver & Co

Rock Oliver flanked by Andrew & Aaron Harrison

Rock Oliver knows no complacency. He's not giddy over last season's NCAA National Runner-up "Final Four" appearance. In fact, quite the opposite. Like the Head Coach, John Calipari, and the #BBN…. Big Blue Nation- Oliver expects championships, too. And he's is on a mission to have his trainees prepared to make another run for a national championship. That would, no doubt, return the gleaming smile.

On this day, I witnessed the players finishing up strength workouts and recovery nutrition only to find them heading across the hall to the Kentucky Wildcats Sports Medicine Complex, where Head Athletic Trainer Chris Simmons is located, for some under-water treadmill training. Coach Oliver learned all about HydroWorx helping injured QB Carson Palmer rehab his blown out knee. While a coach with the Cincinnati Bengals, Oliver added this training method to his already bulging notebook. Check out this training in the video and photos!

It's nestled into the foothills of the Santa Catalina mountain range, the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort…..  giant saguaro are everywhere you look and it's tough to leave those comforts….even just for a few hours! But, I did. And it was on into Tucson I went , down Speedway Boulevard, a left onto North Campbell and it was into the heart of Arizona Wildcat country….and there it was. The McHale Center. And Arizona Stadium. Arizona Wildcat fixtures.

    The Pics….Click Here

DownloadIt's about a twenty-five minute drive from there to The University of Arizona and that's where I caught up with the strength and conditioning coach for the Arizona Wildcats. Under Head Basketball Coach Sean Miller, Chris Rounds directs the training program for one of the premier programs in college basketball. Coach Rounds realizes that he's working with some of the elite athletes of the sport…and trains them accordingly. Injuries to players are at a minimum. And therefore, players like Aaron Gordon flourish in a program like the one at UA. Gordon was able to test out near the top of several categories at the NBA Combine. And his vertical jump was astounding! Interestingly, Rounds prefers to lessen extra conditioning work during the off season so as "to minimize the wear and tear on their bodies and hopefully they'll have long professional careers without breaking down."

So in between the steaks at Lil' Abners or the fine dining at The Flying V , I was able to get this ASAP Podcast with Coach Chris Rounds.

  • ASAP at 2014 Michigan Football Strength Clinic Highlights

    Mich
Former Michigan linebacker Jibreel Black suggested to ASAP Director of Sports Science Ted Lambrinides and me that when in Ann Arbor Michigan, we have breakfast at Benny's Family Dining…and that it's a sure bet.  And, since Jibreel is 6'2" and 285 pounds, you have to figure that he knows a little bit about where to get a good meal! Well, Ted and I had some custom made omelets that definitely hit the spot and got us the proper nutrition needed to attend the 2014 Michigan Football Strength Clinic.

    Gonlue
This year's speakers included speed coach Tom Shaw, strength guy Dan John, Michigan Athletics' nutritionist Joel Toloro, and Wake Forest strength coach Jim Smith. The clinic kicked off with a keynote talk by Michigan Football Coach Brady Hoke who was followed by Michigan Football's Director of Strength and Conditioning Aaron Wellman. In addition, Kevin Vanderbush and Etan Reeve served as clinicians.
We got some pics and video while there…check it out!

And by the way….Thanks for the tip Jibreel!!
